Same. I prefer epub format and CoolReader if possible. I just don't like Kindle's interface and all the other stuff you mentioned.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Same but I usually do fbreader on android.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 Yeah, that's a good app. Not everything needs to be a social activity.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
They also do a good job of unfucking font hinting.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that what Kindles do now? Yikes, I wouldn't like that either, OP. I hope B&N doesn't go that way with the Nook. I mean, assuming they stay in business.

Unfortunately I think its amazon, goog, apple, and kobo soon.

I'll always prefer the overall experience of actual books but Kindle is so easy if you're on a long train journey or going on holiday etc. But I get so anxious seeing how long it predicts it'll take me to read something, especially huge books that are about 900+ pages.

My solution is I try to ignore the estimated read time, I don't even deliberately look at it now. And when I'm reading I set the bottom corner to page numbers rather than "time left in: book/chapter" because screw that.

"time left in: book/chapter"

That's a thing? Who wants that??

It's been there since as long as I've had a Kindle, and I got mine in 2014. I personally don't know *any* serious readers who wants an estimate of how long they will take to read a chapter, never mind the entire book so I have no idea why it's there!

Unless it's for the people who obsess over their excessive Goodreads target and refuse to read longer books in case it harms their progress in the books they're clearly skimming at best anyway. Idk.

Eh, I like it. It lets me guestimate if I can read one more chapter before bed and stuff. Or if I just want a quick read and not a huge time investment.

But then, I've always been the kind of person who sees what page the chapter ends on, anyway.

nayrt

Yeah, I'll occasionally turn it on to check how long I have to go in the chapter.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've personally turned all that shit off and I've never had a problem downloading a book. But I fucking hate the Kindle app because all I want is a reader, not a reader and a store.

when my 1st gen Nook died, I started shopping around for a new ereader that was better for pdfs and could read a million formats and had a backlight and was easy to use calibre on and ended up with a Kobo Forma. I've looooved it-- it has integrated Overdrive support if your local library does that sort of thing, but you literally never have to see any kind of storefront or any social ANYTHING if you sideload books (which I do). I actually couldn't tell you if books purchased through their store/interface do the things you mention not liking about the Kindle, because I've never used it.

Seriously, I cannot recommend Kobo enough to anyone who's looking for a non-Amazon e-reader. It's been so, so awesome.

I got tired of the Kindle app a long time ago and started researching alternative choices. I tried a bunch of different ones, and my favorite is called AlReader. It lets you customize literally everything you can think of, and I love that it gives page numbers to all books, not the stupid location thing that Amazon does with books that don't have actual page numbers (at least that's what it did the last time I used the Kindle app; I guess it might've changed by now) and it shows how many pages are in a chapter, which I really appreciate when trying to decide if I have enough time to read one more chapter. It's awesome.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell? Kindles do that? Damn.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I back-up pirate everything I buy that's in a format meaning it can be taken away again. Yes, I want to support the author. No, I do not want to "rent" my book.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Moon Reader for epubs on Android. Or the library! I refuse to do business with Amazon.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-13 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding Moon+ Reader. I even bought the pro version, that's how much I like it.

I mostly use mine when Overdrive has a withdraw that goes through the Amazon. Though I did get kindle unlimited so I could check out some comics easily.

It's worthwhile trying to play around with your settings. I also hate other people's highlights and it telling me my reading speed -- so I found a way to them off. I like seeing % read, but I can turn that off, too, if I want.

I use a kindle app on an iPad, so the details will probably differ. But we're not the only ones who hate this stuff, so do check out the settings. You may be able to get rid of 90% of your irritation.
