I haven’t watched the show though I’ve been tempted but OP says the watched that many episodes before realizing there was never going to be explicit M/M? Seriously?

There are only ten more episodes to go, too. I mean... I don't want to be critical, but I am a little confused as to why someone would think there was going to be actual BL in this. People who weren't familiar with the fandom generally don't expect it, and the show is NOT described as m/m. Fans of the novel generally already knew the adaptation wasn't going to be BL because it's China. I guess someone could get a really mixed up impression from fandom (plus a lot of wishful thinking) if they weren't paying close attention?

to be fair, in a lot of fandom circles, fans of this are screaming about it being BL from the get-go because it was a BL....something else first. Manga? Novel? I don't know which came first. I have had multiple people who know my tastes demand that I watch it because it's "right up my alley" but since I already know that it's just wink-wink-nudge-nudge levels of subtext I've decided to pass and they can't handle it. I have been told I'm not supporting actual! real! BL! on Netflix!!!

so it depends on the gears of the hype machine that pulled OP into it. if it was friends or fandom like mine that swear up and down it's totally gay on screen despite the fact we all know it isn't, then I would understand how they got snowed for 40 episodes.
