Except yes, "but the censoooooors" is very much the main and valid reason in this case. This is not an American show that was preemptively censored to sell well in China. This is a Chinese TV show where the people in charge could and would go to jail for not complying with censorship laws.

I actually thought they did get quite a bit past the radar, as much as it was possible. There is no genderbending or adding a female LI for the two MCs. It's actually pretty good, considering the severe limitations.

IA. And all the het romance (what little there is of it) is considerably more low key than the supposedly subtextual m/m, which I thought was funny.

This. In this case, they literally couldn't go there even if they wanted to.

This. There's a difference between queerbaiting and subtext that is only barely subtext to avoid anyone getting jailed. I am pretty sure anyone watching would be well aware of what the relationship is supposed to be.

Yeah, I think someone needs to remind the OP that different countries are different and there's a vast amount of difference between if this had been an American series and it being a Chinese series. Breaking Chinese censorship laws would in fact have had huge consequences for all the people involved and it isn't worth that just to make explicit what they did an excellent job making implicit. And at the very least the original source material is still gay so it's not like explicit queer content for the main couple doesn't exist.
