OP

Ah. Yes. Personally I was hoping that there was going to be something else going on than what it looked like in the first episode and Alex was going to be not dead somehow.

Their relationship was really different to anything I think I've seen on screen before. I'm really impressed that they managed to get across that kind of vulnerability I guess? in so little screen time. I think Alex is relatable too in that lots of gay people don't have typical teenage and early 20s experiences because they're questioning or have a smaller dating pool, and I guess plenty of people who are on the spectrum as I kind of assume Alex was, or just very focused on academic stuff have similar missed opportunities.

I thought it was interesting too that they were both "innocent" as they called each other in different ways. Danny didn't know anything about the world Alex was involved in and Alex had no experience with Danny's world either.

Yeah exactly. I just didn't believe at all until pretty much the last episode that the whole thing with the box was actually what it looked like, so when it turned out that it was I found it disappointing not only in an 'I wanted a happier ending' sense but also in a 'I was expecting a much more interesting twist' sense.

Yes! I think the reveal fell a bit flat considering how convoluted it looked at the start when Danny was discovering all the crazy shit that was going on. It didn't really make sense to me that they'd kill Scottie and not Danny, so I thought they must be keeping him alive for a reason. I thought maybe they were keeping Alex alive so he would keep working for them and they were threatening to hurt Danny if he didn't comply or something. When that wasn't the case it just seems really sloppy to leave Danny alive, running around London with the thing they killed Alex over in the first place. What I got from this is that MI5 are idiots? Kill the useful one, and leave the nosy one with a serious grudge alive to cause mayhem. A+ plan there.
