I hate that all Reddit does is critisizing China for the measures the take to contain the virus. Reddit sucks at the moment. I think China is doing great. So there's a video of the police dragging a middle aged lady into a car and then supposedly quarantine because she is sans mask. It looks bad but I think the lady is in the wrong here. The rules are for everybody.
Also Reddit always adds a political twist into discussion. Flue can hit any country and healthcare shouldn't be abiut politics. I'm just glad that the flue didn't originate somewhere in India tbh as they are notoriously bad in organizing.
It makes me revaluate my opinion about Reddit.

A friend of mine told me that a woman in Salzberg apparently 'escaped' quarantine. COME ON! This is how the zombie apocalypse starts, people.

On a lighter note, we've been getting stuff shipped to us fairly regularly (it's how we roll), and every time we get something packed with those air-inflated pillows, Chief says 'don't pop those, Corvid-19!! Chinese air!'. He doesn't believe it, of course, but I guess some people do actually think...Chinese people sit around blowing those up with a straw or something? Yeesh.

I don't think there is any evidence that this virus is zombie apocalypse level in a country with quarantines, cleanliness, hospitals with a certain level of care, medication, etc. It is dangerous in the third world, that we know. It is dangerous in China, an authoritarian country with not a great track record on health. That doesn't mean we should be panicking that it will be the same level of dangerous here. Certainly we should be cautious. But panic I don't think is called for.

Bb, I was joking. Some idiot running out of quarantine because they 'have to find their family' or 'aren't going to let them kill me!!' is how most of the zombie apocalypses in movies and stuff start.

You're in quarantine for a reason, stop being silly.

No idea. The cause is low thyroid hormone, I'm now on a thyroid med, that's supposed to sort things out in a few days.

Not in and of itself. It can be a symptom of something dangerous.

My rough sense is that it's really, really highly contagious but not especially dangerous in terms of mortality rate

There was a Simpsons episode years ago where Bart catches an illness from a fast food meal toy packed in China. Maybe people are thinking of that and taking it too seriously.

China is authortiarian and a major abuser of human rights, and the health situation doesn't change that underlying reality in any way. Not being an expert in public health, I can't speak to whether or not China is reacting appropriately to the disease, and it's always highly likely that Reddit is being dumb. But at the end of the day, it's reasonable to be critical of China, in principle.

My reading online has said that Chinese officials, especially at ground zero, were more concerned about passing the buck, pointing fingers, and not doing anything (so as not to get into trouble), than actually being proactive.

So, yeah...criticize away, just keep the gross bigotry out of it.

The CDC said that's why they renamed it, so that it wasn't specific to one place or anything, so less chance of it being used to stigmatize. I mean - not that people won't do it, but it hopefully cuts down on it a bit.

Reddit can suck, but I have to say I enjoyed the beating they gave Blizzard... oh excuse me, Activision-in-Blizzard-skin, over the WC3R clusterfuck.

(Well, it's sort of on-topic, considering how much of the cock over there Activision enjoys sucking.)
