China is authortiarian and a major abuser of human rights, and the health situation doesn't change that underlying reality in any way. Not being an expert in public health, I can't speak to whether or not China is reacting appropriately to the disease, and it's always highly likely that Reddit is being dumb. But at the end of the day, it's reasonable to be critical of China, in principle.

My reading online has said that Chinese officials, especially at ground zero, were more concerned about passing the buck, pointing fingers, and not doing anything (so as not to get into trouble), than actually being proactive.

So, yeah...criticize away, just keep the gross bigotry out of it.

The CDC said that's why they renamed it, so that it wasn't specific to one place or anything, so less chance of it being used to stigmatize. I mean - not that people won't do it, but it hopefully cuts down on it a bit.
