But your taste includes no black people! Err, why? Is there something about the dcotor that you think a black actor couldn't portray? Is there something intrinsically "white" about the doctor?

Re: AGREED D:

Oh and that's before we get to No Women Either !11!

*sigh*

Re: AGREED D:

(Anonymous) 2008-11-12 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just a preference. How the hell is it any different to stating "I really don't want the doctor to have long greasey hair and wear a heavy metal t-shirt" or "I don't want the Doctor to be a chav" or "I don't want the doctor to be a teenager"?

I'm so sick of how goddamned politically correct people are nowadays. Having a preference for something does not mean you're racist. It's people saying "RAH MAKE HIM BLACK RAH MAKE HIM BLACK!" that's bringing race into the issue, not anyone who really just has preferences.

Shrug

Oh yes, because gender and race are as easily changeable as a personality! Or clothing or hairstyle! Or age! The fact that you're trying to link them together is hilarious.

Re: AGREED D:

(Anonymous) 2008-11-12 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Who's trying to link them together? I'm saying in my opinion it makes no difference at all, if I don't particularly see the Doctor in that way, I don't see him in that way. There are plenty of 'looks' I just plain don't associate with the Doctor. Female, and anything apart from white, mid 20s to 60s, and British doesn't fit the bill. I'd be just as narked if the next actor was American or Australian.

Just my two cents. Sorry.

and anything apart from white, mid 20s to 60s, and British

And there's totally nothing racist about that at all. *headdesk*

Re: AGREED D:

(Anonymous) 2008-11-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's not. Are you the sort of person who thinks people who haven't dated outside their creed are racist, too? I am so tired of people who throw around the word "racist" these days at the drop of a hat. It REALLY takes any strength away from people who actually ARE racist scum. We should spend more time focusing on them and less on trigger words.

Not OP and not white either (asian, english, word).

Re: AGREED D:

(Anonymous) 2008-11-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
You don't get that racism comes in different flavors and degrees, do ya?

Racist scum = racist.
Otherwise nice people with unexamined biases = racist.

The racism that doesn't make people run around burning crosses is nearly as bad and certainly more durable; it goes unquestioned, unremarked upon, and worms its way into policy. This is just that sort.

Re: AGREED D:

(Anonymous) 2008-11-13 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
But how IS it any different to any other form of opinion or preference? Genuine question. How is saying "I'd rather a black guy didn't do this" any different to saying "I'd rather a redhead didn't"? People used to critisize Piper (or rather, Rose) all the time for being a bleach blonde chav, and they were never told they were prejudice, just that "Omgg you hate Rose D: how could youuu". How is that any different?

People are just SO racially charged. When the Doctor was shit to Martha, it wasn't that he was getting over Rose, or that he just plain didn't want to deal with it, oh no. He was RACIST. He was EVIl. We had people in the goddamned fandom call it "MARTHAGATE" for crying out loud. Can you imagine if DONNA, who he DID openly mock and roll his eyes at often, had been black? The world would have exploaded.

I do think they're right, it's just reacting to the wrong thing. It's middle class white people fighting injustice by jumping over any little thing and missing the bigger picture.

Re: AGREED D:

(Anonymous) 2008-11-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
What you're seeing is a natural reaction as a whole lot of people wake up from the last several hundred years and begin to realize that darker-skinned people aren't actually inferior/dangerous/dirty/etc. Some oversensitivity is going to happen. Overreactions too. However, a lot of the things people call 'racism!' on really are racism, albeit of the sort that no one would bat an eyelash at fifty or sixty years ago. It's a very very good thing that people are now willing to recognize and call out the subtler sorts.

The bigger picture is much bigger than you think. This sort of thing is going to happen until racism as a practice seems like a quaint antique absurdity. It's going to be a while yet before we get there.

How is saying "I'd rather a black guy didn't do this" any different to saying "I'd rather a redhead didn't"?

Because redhaired people haven't been systematically disenfranchised, hated, beaten, murdered, enslaved, and deemed "unworthy" because of the color of their hair, and black people have?

Unless you count the Irish?

Re: AGREED D:

(Anonymous) 2008-11-13 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
...you did NOT just try to go there, did you?

Your first error is assuming that all redheads are Irish. That's a pretty trivial mistake. Your second, much less trivial error is implying that the bigotry that faced the flood of Irish immigrants from about 1820-1860 is still going on today.

Look. In the U.S. alone, while thousands of black people were actually THE PROPERTY OF ANOTHER HUMAN, deprived of citizenship, property rights, suffrage, and basic human dignity, there were Irish immigrants becoming mayors and representatives and business owners.

And let me put it this way: while the entire United States was discussing what it meant for the nation that Barack Obama was black, not ONCE did anyone pause to wonder what it meant for the country that John McCain was Irish.

It's not a valid comparison.

Cry moar, PC faggot.

Re: AGREED D:

(Anonymous) 2008-11-13 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Blacks are not the only race that has had this happen to them, and I for one am really sick of them acting as they are the ONLY people that have ever, ever, ever been persecuted.

Cry moar, Jesse Jackson.

haha yeah age is really easy to change

unless you're talking like "increasing it by one second per second"
