On a related note (particularly if your icon is any indication), I'm pale as all hell and have found myself in a similar, though opposite, position with certain characters I wish I could cosplay. I did take a rather cheap loophole in finding an excuse to cosplay as Anthy, using one of her artbook costumes and the color scheme employed in the illustration. I still look silly. (Even without the skin factor, I'm still flat chested...) I mostly try to keep the characters I cosplay within reason as far as body type and appearance goes, but ultimately, it's about having a good costume and most of all, playing the role.

I think if you look different from a character physically, then you'll have to put a little extra effort, both in costume and presence, but generally if you do put that effort in, then the looks you'll get are generally those of admiration rather than 'wtf'. And if not... eh.
