Thanks for making my secret, Almighty Secret Makers! (Surprised to see it above the cut, too, oop.)

I'm also mature enough to admit I think that's a bitchin' promo picture, and if I knew less about the source material, I would totally be here for that movie.

This is exactly how I feel about this movie, actually.

Birds of Prey without Babs is simply Not Birds of Prey. Plus I dislike Harley as a character so them making the movie all about her cemented the fact that I am definitely not watching it.

okay, I've been wondering so this seems like a safe place to ask. what's actually up with this movie? I don't know much about comics but I'm pretty sure Harley Quinn was...never in anything until Batman Animated created her and now she's being retroactively shoehorned into other comics? so why is she in Birds of Prey? Why is she being billed as the only character in this movie at all? don't worry about spoilers, I'm never going to see anything Harley Quinn related because...wow if there was ever a pop culture character I have zero interest in, she'd be it.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
She started in the animated series but she's been in the comics for 20 years or so and comics have a very loosey-goosey attitude towards this stuff in general

I think she's the main character of the movie because she was in Suicide Squad and this is sort of a spinoff

SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
She's not a member of the BOP in the movie. Renee, Dinah, and Helena just sorta meet through her and form their team sans-Harley at the end of the movie.
She's the billed character because Margot Robbie was the one who pitched the movie and Warner Bros. was probably hoping to cash in on her Suicide Squad popularity.

Re: SPOILERS

thanks. so that basically sounds like the dumbest way to make a movie and I have no problem giving it a pass.

Re: SPOILERS

Their problem was marketing. The R rating in this case probably wasn't necessary and likely hurt more than helped (Suicide Squad wasn't even R, and you'd think they were trying to get the same audience). The movie itself is imo pretty solid.

slight spoilers

i enjoyed the movie a lot but i do find it weird that they called it birds of prey when that team doesn't really exist until the very end of the movie in a short ending-montage.

but i wonder if the reshuffling DC went through where a bunch of projects got put on hold caused the original aim of making gotham city sirens turn into BoP instead. because i feel like the story for harely in this would have made more character-sense for GCS. as it was i still liked the movie a lot and thought it was good fun, but i understand people being confused as to why harley is so prominently involved in a story she has nothing to really do with in the comics.

Re: slight spoilers

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's because Margot Robbie is a BoP fan and had hoped to spin them off into their own movie. Probably won't happen now.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Considering that Bab's isn't the only member of Birds of Prey I can handle her not being there, I like Huntress and Black Canary more anyway. Also they're trying to make a Batgirl movie, so even if they wanted her they probably weren't allowed to use her.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Barbara Gordon sucks. Joker should have aimed higher.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oracle fans are the worst. Barbara hasn’t been in a wheelchair for a decade and they’re planning on bringing her into another movie. She was never going to be in this.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Since this was a Suicide Squad spinoff, and I hated what they did to my favorite comic book in that movie, I had no faith in Birds of Prey. After seeing the first trailer for BoP, I had no desire to watch the film.

I thought it felt like the movie Suicide Squad should have been. At the very least, it was much better.

I want it to do well because a) more women-driven/all women movies need to do well and b)I really enjoyed Harley Quinn/Margot Robbie in the otherwise execrable SS.

I hope it's still playing here in my town when my paycheck rolls around on Friday (though, considering I need to pay my electric bill, I might not have a movie in the budget.....*sigh*)

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
I had a great time with it, so I hope you get a chance to see it!

Me, too!

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I get the disappointment because I like Oracle and think it’s interesting seeing her in the watchtower role, but I think this is a shitty attitude. If you want more female driven comic movies, you need to support female driven comic movies. It would be a little different if this was a bad movie but most people seem to have really enjoyed it. You know a sure fire way to never see Oracle as part of this team? This moving failing.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-18 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I'm gonna try to catch it in theaters because my thing this year is gonna be supporting female directors.

tbh I had a similar thought because despite loving most of the movie, I'm still in awe at how they managed to so completely miss the mark with Cass

Apparently, it's actually doing quite well in the box office, considering it hasn't opened in China yet. Somewhere along the lines of having made back what it took to make it and well into the advertising budget spent on it. So there is that.

But, well, critics hated it. So that means it bombed.

And it's DC, when have they *ever* followed their own comic books to the letter? Or even remotely close to?
