The "reads like fanfic" thing is kind of hard to explain, and doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. There's just...IDK what to call it, just a...certain quality that feels very fanfic-y to me, and I'll sometimes notice it in published books. Again, it doesn't mean it's bad (I frequently really like books that remind me of fanfic), it's just...different in a way I can't quite explain.

And then of course, when I'm reading synopses of books trying to find something new to read, I'll occasionally come across a book (usually a self-published one) that's described like this:

"Dylan Walker and his brother Sean were raised by their single father and have been all over the country fighting demons and monsters, sometimes barely escaping with their lives, but now that their father's missing and there are killings in a small town in Wisconsin that are like nothing they've ever seen before, could this be what finally takes them down?"

and it's like...COME ON.

Same. I can't entirely explain it, but some stuff is just... written in a very fanfiction style.
