all the news outlets going 'loving father! look at these pictures from his facebook page of him smiling with the cute kids

Are these like...actual, legitimate news outlets? Our news outlets (US) get plenty of criticism, but I can't imagine any of them calling a guy who's murdered his entire family a loving father, at least not any of the reputable ones. Maybe some fringe blog or some idiots in comments somewhere, but not any of the big networks.

SA

I mean, there might be an interview with a neighbor saying how shocked they are, because he SEEMED like a loving father, but I can't imagine anyone actually saying he was one.

Loving parents can still abuse their children, particularly non-physical abuse. It still traumatizes the child.

Thank you for this statement! I have been verbally and emotionally abused by both parents at different times in my life and they (and others) think it's excusable because they put clothes on my back and gave me a place to live.

Okay but I think ayrt is just trying to make the point that no reputable news outlet would characterize this murderer as such due to how obviously bad of a take that is.

person you're talking about

Yes. Like I mentioned above, someone might say people THOUGHT he was a loving father before he killed them, but I can't imagine anyone from any reputable news outlet saying he actually was one, while knowing that he murdered them.

Mostly, it's just very enthusiastic use of the passive voice, and a touch of burying the lede. I got these ones off twitter -

Daily Mail Australia: How ex-footy star showered his kids with affection and love before he was torched to death with them inside a burning car
BBC News (UK): Outcry after family of ex-rugby player die in fire
CNN: Former rugby league player Rowan Baxter, wife and children dead after Brisbane car fire
Fox Sports Australia: Ex-NRL player Rowan Baxter dies alongside his three kids, estranged wife in Brisbane care fire tragedy
- Same source, from the article - four paragraphs in, we get: A witness reportedly heard a woman, believed to be his estranged wife, scream "he's poured petrol on me" after leaping out of the burning car.
