lmfakjdh the only character I recognize on there is Hanzo so...to be fair, the dub voice credits in all Koei games go uncredited. it must suck to know you've cashed a paycheck for a role but the only way anyone knows you did it is if some super-dedicated fan put it on your imdb or you mention it yourself in a press release for a convention appearance. on the other hand, Koei has also mostly dumped dubbing at all for most of their properties and I personally think that's the best thing they could have done. the voice acting for the Dynasty/Samurai Warriors dubs sucks.

He was well known earlier on in his career for his VA roles, Kanji from Persona 4 comes to mind. Basically that was his last anime role and that was in 2012. (the P4 game was back in 2008) He's been working consistently since then but like right after he got his Last Of Us role, he dropped pretty much all of his Japanese roles.

k so...is there a reason? did he get fired from Funimation? did he quit to make more money doing something else and rightly so? I honestly don't know who he is aside from one of Funi's mediocre stable. if he's doing something now that's making him happier or more satisfied or richer than dubbing for Funi then I guess more power to him. it's not a personal middle finger to everyone who likes anime if a dub actor changes careers, and even if he did it because he was tired of fans and the industry, so what?

now, if he went on some kind of public tirade about dubbing being a terrible career and went to try something different that isn't making him more money or fame or personal satisfaction, well, that's different. or I guess if he's bragging about being popular and loving the attention now that he's not doing dubbing anymore, well...douchebag but still not a crime.

da but I think it's basically that it isn't that he doesn't enjoy doing anime, but rather that by now he has enough of a reputation and portfolio that he can command way more money than what most anime can pay for VA roles, so taking those roles would actually be a major cut for him financially compared to what he could be earning.

I've met him before and he seemed to really love his anime roles and his fans just given how animatedly he talked about the characters that he played.

No, he just stop doing the roles from what I can find out. He refused to come back to voice the characters he played for years. (both video games and anime) The way it came off, to me in particular, was that he thought he was too good for these roles. It very well might just be a money or preference issue, honestly that's probably what it is, and he has every right to make those decisions... but that's what makes this a secret. I'm not saying that I think it's some sort of crime, just that I'm disappointed by his decisions is all.

He refused to come back to voice the characters he played for years.

... that's not true at all, though? He was actually very upset that he didn't get asked back to record the new lines for the Tales of Vesperia re-release because he'd wanted to do it.

Unless you're confusing refusing to come back with not being allowed to because he's union now. Since he's union, he's only allowed to take union jobs, which means that if a role is non-union, he can't take it even if he wants to because of the way unions work.

I've heard mixed stories about ToV and him not returning. I know that sometimes it's something to do with the agent, and others it can be just scheduling. I (briefly, so if you have a better link, let me know) searched it up just now and most of the information I could find was about a tweet he made... which isn't exactly reliable imo. (I know at the time of the original Xbox release that the VA who played Flynn said they did some extra voice work which implied they would release the PS version not ten years later, but that's besides the point...)
If there was a character I would think to be the exception it would be Yuri though. He's an extremely popular character, to the point he had to be retired on Bandai's list of top favourite characters since he kept winning every time. Either way, he didn't return to play him, and I don't entirely buy his just not knowing about it.

The union thing is more complicated, since I'm not familiar with what shows/games are unionized. Though I found him not retuning to voice Rhys being in conflict with a union contract, it seems that it's a case by case scenario? Also I can't find when he joined the unionizing became a t

What I can find is that the union is a newer thing, though I might be wrong.

He was "gutted" at not being able to come back as Yuri - was never approached, sadly: https://twitter.com/troybakerva/status/1043084182405173248?lang=en But I guess if you don't believe it, then I guess that tweet won't matter.

It's not uncommon for Japanese games to not re-hire (I don't know if it's a new trend, or always been), but it's been happening a lot more frequently. I don't know how often the VA's know it or not. Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7 both come to mind with very well known VA's that all had them switched out for their remakes or new games/follow ups. And apparently have done it a few times (Kingdom Hearts changed Aerith's VA multiple times, for example).

I think it's about whatever's cheaper for the company in America.

Oh.

You're a fanbrat who's determined to hate him and not the industry.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh hey, he was Abel on Trinity Blood, wasn’t he? If so, I think that’s the only anime role I remember him in. I dunno if this is still true, but I remember reading somewhere that anime dubbing pays really low, so a lot of VAs make the switch from anime to video games because the pay is better:

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
i won't ever say this unanon, but i judge him for it too.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, most of his anime voice acting roles are just. Boring and same-y. When he quit doing them he finally started utilizing his range because Joel from the last of us sounds radically different from his joker or other non anime stuff. As opposed to his generic anime voice which is pretty same-y and just his talking voice with cringe-y inflection. For a long time I personally considered him a less talented Matt Mercer/less charming Nolan north.

Very fair. I've always found he has a very recognizable voice, but it's definitely more apparent in his anime roles I agree. Love the comparisons btw, very accurate.
