[Avatar: The Last Airbender]

Probs bc at least Zuko and Katara were closer in age.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't the age difference the same either way? 12 and 14 vs 14 and 16?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Technically, Aang's like over a hundred.

Aang's prepubescent. I couldn't ship him with anyone.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
14 and 16 is still way less squicky than 14 and 12. That two years extra experience makes a huge difference, for kids.

Aang is not typical twelve, though. He's had the weight of the world on his shoulders and has had to mature fast. Sure, at the beginning he's all fun and games. But by the end of the show he's grown up a lot and I'd argue he no longer reads 12. He reads at least as old as Katara.

DA

I'm not sure what show you were watching, but that is not what happened at all.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
People shipped it because they had a scene where they talked about their mothers while they were both captured. I personally hat the paring, but I can see where it comes from at least.
In Aang's case he isn't so much obsessed with him as he is finding the Avatar in order to prove himself to his father. He doesn't care about Aang personally, nor would he treat the Avatar any different if it was a water tribesman/woman. Being obsessed with finding the Avatar is not the same as being obsessed with Aang. (also he continues to see him as the Avatar even after he joins their crew)

I mean it sounds to me that you're jus really fixated on your ship than anything else.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't go here, but it seems like a pretty general fact that many ships are more about what fans like and want to see than what's actually in the source material, and imo that's completely fine.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-20 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like Zutara but was never fannish about the show and never got involved in fandom. Hearing how batshit Zutara fans apparently were is kind of disappointing, tbh

I guess Aang is my least favorite? I don't hate him or anything, but I have absolutely 0 interest in shipping him with anyone unless he's an adult, and even then not with Katara. No thanks.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-20 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard that argument before, but they have a decent amount of scenes and dialogue both as enemies and as allies in the show, and the show even breaks the fourth wall and hints at it a few times.

I don't ship it, I just think it's funny that people are so determined to invalidate it.

I also think most people who watched the show as a teen or adult were disinterested in any potential for Aang to be shipped with anyone. I watched as a teen and he was a kid to me. Even the canon ending was hard to watch.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally just couldn't ship Aang with anyone cause he looked and sounded 10-12 to me, while the others (except Toph) looked like 14-15 and I was in my late teens at the time the show aired sooooooo...

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I could see why it was a thing (opposites attract and the hero/villain thing, like I Get it) but so many of my friends shipped it and I didn't and I always felt like I was taking crazy pills.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Aang was too young to ship with anyone.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
1. Katara and Zuko both look more like older teenagers, regardless of their official ages. Aang both looks and acts like a kid in more obvious ways.
2. Katara is the easiest character for the young girls common in fic fandom to project onto, and Zuko is the hot bad boy they have a crush on
3. ~fire and water~ ~opposites attract~ vibes appeal to the folks who are already here for hero/villain type shipping
4. it was a weirdly het centric fandom all around, really. probably bc it was a lot of kids for whom it was their first fandom? no exposure to the larger queer fandom culture?

none of this is a bad thing, and I hope all the former zutarians out there have mellowed out and have fond memories of the cool stuff they enjoyed

but yeah the Aang/Zuko vibes were A++

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
???? But Zuko did see Kataara as her own person well before he joined the Gaang.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-21 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. There was all that stuff in season 1 where he walked off with her amulet? And a pretty dramatic one-on-one fight during the Northern Water Tribe arc.

But mostly, for me, they had a super intense scene in Crossroads of Destiny, where... it really did feel like a crossroads. If she'd healed his scar with her magic water... I dunno, felt like there was a whole future projcting out from that possible act.

I for one ship ZukoAang.
