People shipped it because they had a scene where they talked about their mothers while they were both captured. I personally hat the paring, but I can see where it comes from at least.
In Aang's case he isn't so much obsessed with him as he is finding the Avatar in order to prove himself to his father. He doesn't care about Aang personally, nor would he treat the Avatar any different if it was a water tribesman/woman. Being obsessed with finding the Avatar is not the same as being obsessed with Aang. (also he continues to see him as the Avatar even after he joins their crew)

I mean it sounds to me that you're jus really fixated on your ship than anything else.
