I was just in the middle of writing a secret about RPGs and RPers when you stated this. And you know, it is pretty wanky. I just think some things need to be said about RPers who, you know, invest so much of themselves in a hobby that they judge. I remember when I played soccer as a youngin', sure, sometimes I didn't like the way some of my teammates did their corner kicks or any of that, but I never went home and wrote up long 5 paragraph rants on how much I hated the particular way they kicked and how they didn't deserve soccer balls.

And even then, I still wasn't pretending to be a fake characters.

So I agree with you, so much, OP ♥ of this comment.

I've done my fair share of roleplaying, and I actually really like the ew_younerd girl above (and her character), but seriously? If you want to stay sane in RPGs, the key is to realize that everyone is a huge psychotic dork, and suddenly their opinions won't frighten you, anymore. RPing can be a very fun hobby, but it turns into something more when you use it to feel superior. Which, happens, oh, to 90% of roleplayers?

About the best thing you can do is realize that everyone is a huge psychotic dork. ♥ Actually, it makes the whole thing more fun, I find.

I guess I'm confused why it gets used as an elitist playing field - the most fun I have is being utterly cracktastic, and not sharing with anyone. I was also weaning myself from the age of eleven, which was a mystical time some nine years ago, on role playing games which happened entirely on email. Oh, come back to me, my wicked psychotic days of youthful Pern PBeM~

The dorks you meet through RP is a bonus for me. And I never bring in my OCs to RP, and then I went to the YMCA to visit the DJ from the overuse of acronyms, yay! Well, if I could hold a thought - I agree.

I do admit I am sad on the assumption that everyone pours their emotions out through these characters. The least likely thing I am to do when I have things I need to deal with is Role Play. I need to work things out, not a character invented by a writer somewhere in the world. (Though I do know it works as a therapy tool for others. Good on them.)

I am still amused to have three characters up there. I then later went and blared Bon Jovi, Eminem, Alice Cooper, America, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, The Servant, Santana, t.A.T.u., Monty Python's Flying Circus soundbites, and many other artists. This all while finishing homework, before I slipped into bed, cuddled my pillows mercilessly, and after a revitalizing nap made a public post asking for people to talk to me directly when they had issues, because I welcome their words.

Anything you invest yourself in does end up feeling like 'serious business'. This doesn't mean it is; it does mean I've dealt with my fair share of friends who take it to be serious business, which I frankly don't feel, so empathy comes hard pressed. In the end, I find generalizations more irking than I do being called a shitty RPer anonymously. (The latter only amuses me.) Hey, if I suck, well, I suck. Maybe years of a certain apathy toward caring what a bunch of characters I did not invent end up acting like, versus the years of writing (for myself, and not the cesspit, though I admit to having things on ther e- none which I think are literary) and playing via email with original characters of my own makes the difference. Maybe not.

I prefer the original characters, by far. =) I also love having connections with other people who enjoy fandoms I am familiar with. All I expect is entertainment, and that is all I receive. When I don't... I leave.
