Same, only I also won't buy something I like with creators I don't like. Those things I continue to pirate. If I like something and I don't have a problem with the creators, then I'll buy it.

Relative same.

Ok, about 90% same. The only thing I take chances on are newly released movies because they're simply SO cheap around here.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-01 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been doing the same for years. Especially now that there are a gazillion different services and there's no way that I'm subscribing to them for one decent show.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-01 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean... in the case of The Untamed, you wouldn't have needed to pay for it anyway because it was officially released on YouTube.
But yeah, I do this as well.

Don't feel bad. You are supporting those you really want to, and that's what matters.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-01 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don’t think you should feel ashamed. I do something similar. If I’m interested in something, I check to see if the library has a copy of it. I’m lucky to have two great libraries in my city and there’s an interlibrary loan system for the whole county, so I’ve been able to preview most of the things I was interested in. I’ll pirate if it’s not available there or if it hasn’t been released in my country yet. When I do find something I like enough to purchase, I’ll usually spend more money to buy the limited edition release.

I dont steal. Its really a crime what you are doing i understand bootlags but i feel like when watching something you know what you like so why steal

(Anonymous) 2020-03-01 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You have psychic powers? Must be cool to know if you're going to enjoy something before you watch it.

Did you read the entire secret?

(Anonymous) 2020-03-01 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to feel this way, but now that so many new shows fall under the jurisdiction of media mega-conglomerates, I really don't care if they're losing out on my money while I give their stuff a test-run. If I like it, I'll buy in, but no way am I spending my hard-earned money to watch stuff I might not even like.

Of course you are stealing. Are you kidding? Even if you don't like something, doesn't mean they don't deserve anything for you consuming it. Entertainment content shouldn't be paid based on some kind of tipping system.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-02 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
... so I should feel guilty that I borrowed the Star Trek: Discovery DVDs from my library?

LOL, I don't mean to pick on you OP, but your comment about The Untamed is even funnier after yesterday's complaint about how how people here heaped so much vitriol on that one secret who said it was queerbaiting.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Same lol

Only things I buy with almost no knowledge beforehand (but a summary) are books and some manga I can't find online. Unfortunately for me, even buying stuff I like turned out pretty unfortunate because I'm now stuck with entire boxes of things I don't like anymore.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Shouldn't there be a spoiler warning for the Untamed?

SPOILER WARNING for The Untamed

(Anonymous) 2020-03-02 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ehhh... this happens within the first five minutes of the first episode. They straight up tell you that the protagonist is dead when the story begins. Then the main part of the story begins because someone summons his soul back to the human world and he's alive again.

Another free option, if you're in a area that has it, is to take advantage of a library system with multimedia holdings.

Same here. I can't afford to go see every movie that looks interesting, or subscribe to every streaming service if a trailer piques my interest.

No reason to feel guilty, since you're supporting things you like and, presumably, continuing to support them when other, new things come out.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-02 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, you should feel guilty. You're stealing. If you want to see if you're likely to enjoy something before paying for it, check it out from a library, or read or watch reviews online. Don't steal it and then try to say it's ok because your entertainment budget is limited. Everyone's entertainment budget is limited.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-02 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
This, especially since these days most streaming services have free trials that allow you to do exactly what OP is saying they prefer to do: try before they buy. I was potentially interested The Mandalorian, for example, so I did the free trial for Disney+ to see if it was something I would be interested in continuing to watch. It was, so when the next season comes out I plan to pay for a sub so I can keep watching it.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-02 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm too broke to pay for something I might not like."

So you never try new food then? Or do you steal from the grocery store and go back and pay if you liked it?

You're going to pirate. I get it. Don't like it, but whatever. But I'm so sick of these bullshit excuses. Just say you're going to pirate.

I'm with you, nonnie. I have more money than I used to, so I buy things and if I can't buy them free and clear with no DRM (and can't remove the DRM), I pirate a backup. If they're not available where I live, or the streaming service is too shitty (looking at you, Amazon), I pirate. Honestly, I used to pirate all my non-book media until Netflix and another streaming service started to my country.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-02 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Pirating for a long while was the only way I could watch anything, as most of the popular shows were not airing on comercial television. Now I have access to Netflix and the like, but will still pirate a good chunk of things if I don't have any other access to it.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-02 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same, and try to buy the official release once it's available in my country. I can't afford everything I pirate, but I try.

Most of what I download is anime and probably 70-80% of that never gets an official English release, so I will buy the manga instead if it's available.
