Ok I don't know if it was indeed for kids or not but fell prey to Animation Age Ghetto; Gandahar scared me shitless and gave me recurring nightamres.

Ghostbusters II - specifically the subway scene and the pink bath goo. I loved/love Ghostbusters but I couldn't handle those scenes for years.

I know that film (and the first one) is a bit of a grey area but in the UK it was only rated PG and we did have a shit load of toys themed on it so as far as I'm concerned, it was aimed at children more than anyone else.

I think I was a bit too young for a few movies that were considered "family" movies. Beetlejuice definitely freaked me out.

Return to Oz was where all my nightmares lived as a kid. Everyone goes on about Neverending Story, but I honestly don't even remember if I saw it, it was that unmemorable to me.

I remember being absolutely terrified of the donkey island guy in Pinocchio when he said "they never come back - AS BOYS." and suddenly had a devil face for like 5 seconds. But I also liked the rest of the movie so little dumbass me would happily rewatch the movie with my brother and still get scared of that scene every time.

The Secret of Nimh, for sure. So much creepy shit in that movie. I kind of want to watch it again now to see if it's any good.

I vaguely remember being scared of The Count from Sesame Street when I was three. But in my defense: I was three.

Spirited Away scared my little sister, especially that scene where No Face starts eating everybody.

The Mouse King in the Nutcracker animated movie from the 90s scared me.

Poltergeist - filmmakers successfully lobbied to change rating from R to PG (PG-13 did not yet exist) and should not have
Gremlins
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - the reason, along with Gremlins, the PG-13 rating came about
The Dark Crystal
Alice in Wonderland (1985 TV Movie) - the freaking Jabberwocky scared the crap out of me

Er, you mean NOT movies you were too young to be watching?

Pippy Longstocking's ice cream scene gave me such an uncomfortable feeling, and I don't know why. From what I recall, it was supposed to be joyous?

Unico in the Island of Magic freaked me out with the humans getting turned into puppets. I found the story about Kuruku being mistreated by a previous owner sad and messed up too. Oddly, I rewatched the movie as an adult and wondered wtf I was actually frightened about.

Not so kid movies:
Beetlejuice's seance/exorcism scene. It was pretty gross to me.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - the special effects are hilariously dated now, but the ark opening scene.

The Last Crusade - drinking from the false grail. I remember covering my eyes in the theatre, lol. Now I just kind of shrug at it (and in a twisted way, enjoy Elsa's horror).

Watership Down. I remember in the old days of video stores when I was a kid, my sister and I would pick that one out only when we couldn't find anything else to rent. For the longest time my only memory of that movie was the box cover art, the field covered in blood, and Holly talking about the destruction of the warren.

Also The Dark Crystal, which was our other 'video of last resort.' Somewhat ironically, now that I'm an adult Watership Down is one of my favorite books and I loved the shit out of The Dark Crystal Netflix series.

I honestly can't remember a single kids movie that scared me/was too 'old' for me. Maybe there just weren't a lot around when i was a kid. (We only has three channels on the TV and didn't go see movies that often.)

I remember watching The Omen and being a little freaked...and a couple episodes of Star Trek had freaky moments..... who knows!

The Pink Elephants sequence in Dumbo freaked me out bigtime when I was a kid, as did the blueberry scene in Willy Wonka. Also, the murder of that poor little cartoon shoe in Who Framed Roger Rabbit damn near traumatized me, and the less said about the animated Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the better.

Folding the laundry that I just finished drying twenty minutes ago (I'm too lazy to do some right now), reading some more of my book that's overdue at the library.

Anyone making secrets for next week?

(Anonymous) 2020-03-07 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
There's one that I kind of want to make, but I know it's going to be controversial, and I'm not caught up on the show, so it's theoretically possible that my opinion will change by the time I'm caught up/the secret is posted, and I don't want to have to reply to a bunch of comments calling me an awful person to explain that I don't feel that way anymore.

I'm so dumb.
