The term slash goggles is usually used to mean 'slashing anything and everything that you can see' even if it's based on subtext/chemistry or not.

This is actually the first time I've ever seen it used that way.

Maybe I'm getting old then. You know you've been in fandom too long when they start changing the meanings of the colloquialisms :(

No, I agree with you. And man, now I feel old...young hooligans, it's not cool enough to be "hip" nooo, you gotta be "fly" these days

Seriously, though. I would assume that if you have "slash googles" it would be like wearing "drunk goggles"--the object in question alters your perception of everything. That's why they're "goggles" and not bifocals or "slash monocles" or something. Picking up on chemistry between characters...well, if you're doing it right, slash shouldn't even come into play.

I mean...wait, that sounds wrong. I mean, if you're really simply picking up on chemistry that others may not see, then it's the chemistry you're focusing on, and the actual gender of the characters doesn't particularly matter. If you've got the goggles on, that means it's all slash, all the time.

...or something.

Dangit, fandom, and your wacky, morphing language...

*blink* I'm young. I thought that's what it meant, too. It makes more sense that way. Like rose-colored glasses meaning that you see everything with a bright and happy atmosphere. Or beer googgles, where everything looks better 'cause you're drunk.

Re: 121

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! Rose-coloured glasses! Another good example.
Well, I'm not all that old (23!....ack, I am old...), but I've been in fandom for so long it seems. Maybe it's just that in certain fandoms, the slang means one thing, and then it's slightly different in others, and since it's just slang, no one really explains it.

Love the icon, BTW. Heh...such a great episode. Well, for an episode without Flash (man, can you imagine him as a kid? I don't know if it would be hilarious or terrifying).

I subscribe to your definition, it's the one I've always known. THANK YOU I KNEW I WASN'T CRAZY.

Basically it's an easy way of saying that they've switched from a heteronormative view to a 'homonormative' (not sure that's actually a word) one instead.

But if the meaning's changed, then maybe people aren't doing it so much anymore. Which I can only see as a good thing, really.

I don't know, I've been in fandom since 1999...

Slash goggles have meant "seeing subtext whether it's there or not" for as long as I've seen it. But I started in the anime fandom, where the term wasn't used much.

I think it's a mix between what you're saying and what anon is saying, actually. It's picking up on even the slightest possibly romantic/sexual chemistry between two male (or maybe two female) characters and being able to ship them because of it.

It's definitely not what the OP's saying, though, because seeing the potential or even shipping pretty much every possible gay pairing doesn't mean we can't see the characters as straight, either. I ship a lot of pairings that conflict with each other. We're not all the types that latch onto an OTP and anything that breaks it up sucks, and I'd venture to say that quite a few of us acknowledge that most characters we slash probably aren't gay in canon and maybe even shouldn't be.

Re: 121

Well that's one of the issues with slash/yaoi fandom, we all tend to get tarred with the same brush when it comes to some of the more extreme fangirl issues. Personally I can't stand seme/uke and do everything I can in my writing to go against such stereotypes, but because I'm a participating member of several yaoi fandoms, I might be written off as one of the masses. It's the way it goes.

As for slash goggles, [livejournal.com profile] xanykaos explains it better than me above. There were fandoms, back in the day, where the majority of fic involved basically all of the male characters being paired with another male character, regardless of canon pairings or female characters. Everything they saw, they slashed - 'gay' was their default world view, as it were. That's what slash goggles means, or at least what it used to mean.

I have never, ever heard it used in that way. That doesn't even make sense.

What, the meaning doesn't make sense or that slashing everything you see doesn't make sense? Because the latter is why it's a term used with such derision.
