Re: Fanart trends

I don't think there's a single art style I couldn't love, or that I wouldn't hate, depending on how the artist took the trend/design. Obviously 'bad' art is subjective, nearly as much as the 'good' art is.
I find people judge art, fanart, particularly harshly because it's an art form some can be disillusioned from rather easily. People don't appreciate the love and the effort an artist might put into their work due to simply not seeing it. The same way that people don't understand Dalí, or find Rembrandt (and I've seen and been offended by this before) boring.

I love when artists take their time and are so inspired by a fic that they create fanart for it. What I hate is the people who complain that the fanart ruins the fic, that it makes them not want to reread it ever again because the might have to look about that fanart again. Ignorant as all hell, they are.

I think part of the harshness comes from the uncanny valley effect that can happen when you see characters you recognize that are almost, but not quite, right. It’s the same thing that can make the knockoffs of trademarked cartoon characters you see at cheap fairs or painted on the walls of daycare centers funny or creepy, except with the added awkwardness of trying to look sexy.

AYRT

You see, I wish I knew what you were talking about! I honestly think I might just be that lucky as to not come across such works. Though at the same time I guess I can see how certain characters taken out of their drawn element might cause some whiplash for certain people. I just can't understand how it makes that much of a difference, I guess.

Maybe it's because I generally draw in portraiture that I can just imagine any one character in my style... Like the thing is that I think I know what you're getting at, I'm just having a hard time conjuring it up in my mind, I guess;;
