It pretty much is.
(I love that picture so much. And, ironically - male-created, heh.)

I got a huge book of his paintings plus a biography about him when I was a kid - loved it so much!

Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say I agree.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree, though for me the ideal is a strong mix of genders. But if I have to choose between a text that's almost entirely created by men and a text that's almost entirely created by women, I'll usually take the one created mostly by women.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That's been my personal experience I think, but I dont know if I agree with it as a blanket statement.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
IA.

I was talking to my Dad the other day and he surprised me when he said that when it came down to writing crime/detective stories he thought that women writers were a lot better - especially when it comes down to writing a main character who is a woman. I didn't expect it because he usually turns his nose up at things like the ghostbusters movie with a female leads and the recent Doctor Who well before being able to watch them.

This reminds me of when my very old-school Dad told me when in doubt, vote for a woman because they're the only politicians with balls.

OP

For anyone curious: while there are several works that moved me to create this secret, my specific thoughts while I was making it were about Birds of Prey, Harlots, and Alias Grace.

Not a coincidence: all female writers + all female directors.

Harlots is still full of rape and gratuitous mostly female nudity, I don't see why that's better just because it's written/directed by women.

+1

Yup.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Actually Harlots makes a point to show very little female nudity, it's never gratuitous, and in fact shows much more male nudity. They've even talked about how it doesn't make sense to have full nudity in a Georgian Period-set show, because houses were too cold.

As for rape I would say that it's a series about sex workers, and that's a topic that's unavoidable. Harlots actually explores the effects of rape in a sensitive, understanding manner and never employs in a cheap way.

I'd like to add that on set unlike on just about every single other show with female actors, any sex scenes are shot in a safe environment, and if the actress feels uncomfortable in any way while shooting, the crew will stop immediately and try to find an alternative to what was planned.

This isn't personally true for me. When I look at the things I'm into I like content by both men and women. I just like content by people I think can write good characters and have good worldbuilding, regardless of gender.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about in general, but I agree for fanfiction. I won't read a fanfic if I know it was written by a guy.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
This is becoming true for me as I've been let down by more and more by men who create.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well no? Like, gender has nothing to do with talent.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Gender may have nothing to do with talent, but it has a lot to do with whose work gets picked up and marketed, and with who gets pushback when their ideas need refining.

In terms of professionally published or produced work, there are so many mediocre men who just face fewer hurdles than women. There are so many men who have some talent but who aren't edited. There are so many men who, regardless of how talented they are in other areas, can't write women well. There are so many men who think sexual assault is crucial to the stories they tell. There are so many men who, in writing a series, prioritize flashy/exciting plot things happening over any fidelity to the characters and their journeys as people.

There are so many men out there telling the same story about a middle aged professor or writer having an affair with a much younger woman, there are so many men out there whose work alienates female audiences, and that has nothing to do with whether or not those men are good at telling those stories. Some of them will be very talented, some of them won't be.

But it's entirely valid for someone to be sick to death of men's stories when they've dominated literature and film and when they so frequently alienate non-male audiences. I'm not a woman, and I have plenty of male favorites, but on the whole... I trust things created by women more. I trust them to handle sensitive topics better, I trust them to be more consistent in characterization, and I trust them to show me interesting perspectives. And I trust women to be able to write men, because they grow up having to empathize with male leads in a way men don't always learn to do with women.

And this is why we have the Bechdel test...

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
...and, unfortunately, all of the media that fails the Bechdel test.

SA
I'm only exaggerating a bit, I think. Not always true, but true enough to be freakishly annoying.

To be fair, the Bechdel test is not a test of quality. I could have two women discuss something that has them pass the test, but the book/comic/screenplay could still be a steaming pile of shit in every other regard.
