OP

For anyone curious: while there are several works that moved me to create this secret, my specific thoughts while I was making it were about Birds of Prey, Harlots, and Alias Grace.

Not a coincidence: all female writers + all female directors.

Harlots is still full of rape and gratuitous mostly female nudity, I don't see why that's better just because it's written/directed by women.

Yup.

Actually Harlots makes a point to show very little female nudity, it's never gratuitous, and in fact shows much more male nudity. They've even talked about how it doesn't make sense to have full nudity in a Georgian Period-set show, because houses were too cold.

As for rape I would say that it's a series about sex workers, and that's a topic that's unavoidable. Harlots actually explores the effects of rape in a sensitive, understanding manner and never employs in a cheap way.

I'd like to add that on set unlike on just about every single other show with female actors, any sex scenes are shot in a safe environment, and if the actress feels uncomfortable in any way while shooting, the crew will stop immediately and try to find an alternative to what was planned.
