Voices are a huge reason for me. One of the main reason I downright hated a lot of female characters back when I was still watching dubbed cartoons and especially anime was because, as I noticed later on, female voice actors in native language seem to have only one mode of speaking, and that's the really annoying, squeaky entitled nagging kind of tone. Its really grating but I noticed I didn't mind the same characters nearly as much in other dubs.
