What are your "excuses" for not enjoying some female heavy content?

For me, with youtube I mainly follow guys, and it's because of the voices. There are just some pitches (and I don't know if it's affected or how they THINK they should speak to appeal) that just... are nails on a chalkboard to me.

I don't seem to have this same problem in TV or Movies, but even in heavily female youtube genres that I follow (baking, cooking, crafts) I will stop a video partway and not watch any of their other content even if I LIKE the content if I cannot stand their voice.

I don't actively avoid female-heavy content. But anything about pregnancy, motherhood, stay-at-home traditional womanhood, romance, or just a lot of traditional things girls are supposed to like are not my thing. I mostly stick to fantasy, scifi, animal, or criminal justice themed content.

Ugh, same. I have zero interest in any of that stuff.

A few years ago I took vocal lessons for about a year. My teacher told me to bring songs I wanted to sing and I realized that almost none of the songs on my playlists had female singers. I have no idea why. I still don't listen much to female singers.

I think the female youtuber voice thing might in part be because they tend to forced cheerfulness. Men are never as violently perky. I think if a man was as chipper as so many women, I wouldn't be able to watch him much either.

Yeah, a lot of the ones I follow are mellow and/or they don't seem falsely enthusiastic? I worry that a lot of the females whose voices I can't stand affect it because as girls we're told to be perky and smile!! which makes me sad.

I don't like romance and it's rare to find stories about women that don't include it.

Voices are a huge reason for me. One of the main reason I downright hated a lot of female characters back when I was still watching dubbed cartoons and especially anime was because, as I noticed later on, female voice actors in native language seem to have only one mode of speaking, and that's the really annoying, squeaky entitled nagging kind of tone. Its really grating but I noticed I didn't mind the same characters nearly as much in other dubs.

I copied mine from the main discussion because I put it in kind of a weird spot:

I'm more interested in male characters because all my real life friends are female. Men are like alien creatures to me sometimes, and that's more interesting in fiction. As you can see, if anything, my real-life issues are with men.

But I do enjoy some female-heavy content when it happens to exist and align with my interests. I love Sailor Moon and a few other magical girl anime like Tokyo Mew Mew. I like the new She-Ra cartoon. Mainstream, Western shows with big fandoms that are female-centric and aren't teen dramas or other genres that don't interest me at all? Uh... what are those? People like what's available to them. Make a better variety of female-heavy things and more people will be interested in female characters.

I used to like primarily male singer/songwriters/bands. At the time I thought it was because men expressing their feelings in such an emotional medium felt like it played against gender stereotype, whereas women doing the same felt like it played into gender stereotype. And there may have been a degree of truth to that.

But I think it was also just that I processed emotion a lot more like a guy (repress, act like you don’t care), so I couldn’t (didn’t want to) relate to women being sad and forlorn and pining and all of that. As a teen and young-twenty-something, it seemed weak to me. So there absolutely was an element of internalized sexism in it, for me.

However, I’m in my thirties now, and have come to love a lot of female singer/songwriters. I like some who are very soft and forlorn and some who are hard and edgy and everything in between. Give me the wrath of You Oughtta Know, and the jaded swagger of If It Makes You Happy, and the almost childlike vulnerability of Breathe Me, and the wilting, depressive ardor of Video Games. Give me the flattened affect of Aimee Mann and the dramatic girlishness of Taylor Swift and the aggressive oomph of Pink and whatever the hell Billie Eilish is doing - gimmie that for sure.

That said, it's also okay to just prefer male musicians and go with it. Just because internalized sexism was a significant factor in why I "couldn't connect" with female musicians, doesn't mean that's a reason for every woman who prefers male musicians.

For books, TV shows and movies, I've recently realized that most of the female characters I dislike (two dimensional, stereotypes, only exist to be love interests, etc.) are written by men. Female characters written by women (or in the case of TV shows/movies, if they at least have a woman heavily involved even if there are a bunch of male writers, too) are way more well-developed/nuanced/interesting to me.

YouTube, I watch almost exclusively women (there's actually only one guy I watch, all the other guys I've attempted to watch just annoy me).

I was going ready to say I don't like podcasts with women hosts, but now that I think of it, I've only listened to one (MFM) and it's entirely possible I just didn't like their personalities. I probably need to find some others to check out.

if anything is too much about having babies, getting married, or finding love i won't be interested in watching it. i prefer fantasy/sci-fi stuff anyway, but the more normal shows i check out have to be more than just slice-of-life dramas for me to be interested.

Honestly, for me it's mostly quality. If I like something it's because I think it's good, and if I don't it's because I think it's crap.

Like, I LOVED the Alita movie. but at the time that was proof of my misogyny because I didn't like the RIGHT woman. Remember the "Alita is the preferred heroine for incels" articles at the time?

Lol wait, so what does it mean that I, a woman, enjoyed Alita as well?

Well, if you liked Alita more than you liked Capt Marvel... I mean I think you know what it means for you. You're an internalized misogynist...

Noooooo... except I liked them both.

I really don't understand the bitching about CM. Then again, I liked the new Charlie's Angels movie and don't understand the bitching about that either. Everyone was hot (leads and villains) and stuff blew up, asses got kicked, what more do you want?!

Shit, I'm a lesbian, I loved Alita, and hated CM. What am I?!

I... don't think you know what internalized means.

"Internalised" from the latin "Internus" meaning "Ha screw you, I still get to shame you for liking the wrong things only with you it makes you a gender traitor too!"
