Every time this comes up, the "let people like what they like" commenters never manage to convince me that the bias is solely about preference, so I agree.

I don't think that the bias is solely about preference, but I think that talking about this in good faith requires acknowledging that for a lot of people it is solely preference.

And I constantly see people pointing to things that I think really are preference as evidence of bias - the popularity of m/m ships, for example, I think can be explained almost entirely by the fact that people like what they like. And I don't see what good it's going to do to try to convince people to like other ships. Even if I wish they shared my preferences instead.

I don't think anyone asking this question is arguing that you're not allowed to "like what you like" but more wanting to look at WHY that preference is SO prevalent and what overall societal biases might be affecting that. I understand getting defensive and just wanting to enjoy things that make you happy, whatever that looks like to you, but I don't think it should be counted as some attack against personal enjoyment just to want to figure out why this keeps happening in fandom spaces and what that means on a macro level.

Well said.

It's solely about preference, but preference is often determined by factors we can't control in the canon material. And even when it isn't, there's nothing wrong with it being solely about preference. Female characters aren't people.

And I feel like "well the canon material is just weak" is such a cop-out when fandom tends to happily produce content for male characters with equally dismal canon material.
