It's solely about preference, but preference is often determined by factors we can't control in the canon material. And even when it isn't, there's nothing wrong with it being solely about preference. Female characters aren't people.

And I feel like "well the canon material is just weak" is such a cop-out when fandom tends to happily produce content for male characters with equally dismal canon material.
