I just really hope they won't be making either of these actual canon in the remake (or keep strictly to the "player choice" where you could get hints of your preferred ship or neither) because I don't ship any of it and don't want one of those sides to have the right to say their ship is ~canon~. They'll do it anyway but still.

They already did in the original game, though? Word of God says that Cloud and Tifa is canon, so it wouldn't be like them adding something that wasn't already there.

Yeah, I dont exactly care what they said, it wasn't necessarily in the game. Like, imo, there were definitely some one sided feelings on Tifa's side but whether Cloud actually reciprocated was majorly up to interpretation in the actual game. And I say this as someone who hates Aeris and would prefer CloTi if I absolutely had to choose between the two.

But romances were always what Final Fantasy writing sucked most at anyway.

This ship war never died unfortunately. And the same people who were causing trouble ten years ago are still causing trouble to this day. It was the worst then, it's the worst now.

I'll just sit on the sidelines shipping Cloud/Sephiroth and munch on popcorn. Though I'm sure the current wholesome purity brigade wouldn't like that ship, lol.

It never died, to my knowledge.

I'd been hearing about it BEFORE I played the game. The crazy from both sides. The defensiveness. The name-calling. The insults. When I played it, it was hard to focus without having the fandom in the back of my head making it hard to know what I would've thought without that knowledge prior.

Even seeing AC first was fine! And I knew about THE SPOILER, since I played it so late.

Now with doxxing heavier, and callouts with more "go die" attitude, I do fear for the fandom (new players or those unaware of The War, especially, but everyone really) in how they'll handle it this time.

Especially if they make things MORE of ANY which way, then the arguments or "THAT'S A RETCON" will just devour the joy.

Not looking forward to that.

And, personally, I think so many characters are shippable, so I just wanna have fun.

For somewhere in the ballpark of 10-15 years I have been desperate for a FFVII remake.

And now... I can't believe how lukewarm some of these changed have left me.

It has been the very definition of "Be careful what you wish for"

Come to think of it, how do Cloud/Yuffie shippers fit into all this? I know they exist. (I’ve also seen jokes about Cloud/Barret, but never seen it seriously shipped.)

Yuffie/Vincent is her most popular ship, there's not much for her and Cloud. Cloud/Barret isn't popular but it should be.

Not in the fandom (haven't ever had the chance to play the game) but Cloti is... a terrible ship name.

I honestly don't understand the FF7 ship wars at all. No matter what you ship, Aerith is dead. It's never going to become endgame, so what is there even about it to feel threatened by?

Ship wars.......... are so fucking dumb.

Cloud can smooch Aerith. Cloud can smooch Tifa. Aerith can smooch Tifa. It's fiction. Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

Tifa/Aeris master race tbh. I always loved that even though they had a couple bad moments of "fighting over Cloud" that they were still always off together in most scenes where the characters are fooling around in the background and still genuinely cared about each other.
