I don't think I've ever stumbled into a single fic ever even hinting at genital scents in my entire life and I'm VERY grateful for that, I have to say. I bet this secret has jinxed me, now, will be reading nsfw fics for the next month awaiting for the awkward moment it happens lol

oh i remember this in a fandom years ago, it was always so hilariously awkward to imagine because yeah, genitals either don't smell of anything or don't smell... nice.

I'll be more forgiving of an attempt at describing a vagina-- like, the description might wind up being terrible, but I get it, they've all got a scent and diet/personal chemistry will push certain notes, and some people are into that. But there are FAR fewer words I'll accept if the author is describing dick smell.

I don't know why genital aroma is what we gotta focus on, unless it's... idk, A/B/O fic or something, which I don't tend to read. Like, if we're talking about human beings and what they smell and enjoy smelling... I'm not turned off by a character who likes the natural smell of their partner, depending, but some descriptions will be a turn-off even if the concept is not?

I'd just rather see the sensory details come in other places-- someone's cologne or shampoo being familiar and alluring, a character finding their love interest's brand of laundry detergent comforting, etc... Appreciating someone's natural smell in the heat of the moment can be nice, too, but it doesn't all have to be about taking a deep sniff of someone's junk.

I can accept "musky" because that's literally what it is. Genital sweat isn't the best smell and it's just there.

Also genitals don't taste like honey, stop it.

Tbqh, I'm a raging lesbian and vaginas smell unique. And good. So uh, I'm into it. But I definitely get where OP is coming from and honestly, literary wise, the descriptions hardly work well. Noting there's a smell without describing it in detail is fine enough.

I've encountered similar to this in people apparently deciding that come tastes like mint or something and honestly, regardless of fantasy/not-human characters I still find it ridiculous.

You can always tell who has some real life experience and who doesn't and waxing on about how someone's junk smells is a clear sign that the writer has never seen or touched anyone's special spot in real life.

The only time I can really forgive this is if the pov character is non-human, and from a species in which attraction has a heavy focus on scent/pheremones/etc. Otherwise its just... weird to me, even assuming that the character is purple-prosing it and their partners genitals DON'T literally smell like honey or fruit.
