You and approximately the entire fandom...

+1

The az&crowley bits were honestly about 80% of what I remembered from the book as well. It's fun, but not really that good.

I enjoyed the book for the most part (not the witchfinder bits, those were tedious in the extreme), but yes - the movie somehow took everything fun or interesting or remotely compelling about *every other character* but A/C and made them just....meh.
You said it, Anon.

+1, I enjoyed the Aziraphale and Crowley bits of the show and I really liked Anathema and Madame Tracy's actors as well, even though they didn't have much to do. But everything else was so watered-down and backgrounded that I wonder why they even bothered.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-14 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH They were the only reason I even finished the show because everything else bored the hell out of me.

I was definitely alright with the plot and the not Aziraphale and/or Crowley bits, I had fun with the entire package... But I cannot deny that upon subsequents rewatches I've skipped to just watch their scenes about 70% of the time. They are just so insanely entertaining and have a great chemistry.

I think I would be more than happy with six more hours of just... Aziraphale and Crowley messing around all through history and not miss the other characters one bit...

Same! I loved the whole show, have rewatched it multiple times, and am heavily involved in the fandom. I do watch the full episodes without skipping scenes, but the Aziraphale and Crowley scenes (together or separate) are the ones I look forward to the most. The other parts are good too IMO, but just not as fun to watch.

Yup, it's a really weak show outside of those two tbh, to the point that I was so flabbergasted that THIS was the show everyone kept telling me was 'so good' and 'expertly crafted', when it was just... bad.

It's basically British SPN with all the dodgy special effects and awful story-telling that show has.

a potentially controversial opinion here but:... i don't think A+C were actually written any better than the rest of the show, i just think that Tennant+Sheen are good actors that know how to make a dynamic work and elevated really mediocre writing into something enjoyable.

it's just if i actually look at the dialogue+moments they have... none of it really stands out to me as anything notable, but with Tennant+Sheen performing those moments? it works.

A lot if the dialogue is lifted wholesale from the book, and while it works on the page, it really should have been reworked to account for the different medium.

AYRT.

You know what I think I agree with you, because while I did enjoy their dynamic I didn't feel like it was anything super-amazing writing-wise either, they were the only entertaining aspect of the show for me but I also wasn't overly captivated by them to the point where I felt the need to contemplate their characters/relationship after the fact.

If they hadn't been played by a decent pair of actors I wonder if I'd have enjoyed them at all. Hm.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-14 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it, but this is a fair reaction.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-14 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
They were definitely the best part, IMO. So good that I think most people were okay with the rest of it being less good. I was particularly underwhelmed with the Four Horsemen, but the parts with the child actors were weak as well.

I agree, Aziraphale and Crowley were the best bit in the TV version, and I would definitely watch and extended version of all the past 6000 years staring them.

Although it has its flaws, I thought the radio adaption did a good job with The Them, especially with the ending where they were more involved with swaying Adam's decision.

I've only watched the series once so far but definitely remember feeling I could've happily watched "an angel and a demon keep fucking everything up/annoying their management" and not really given a shit about anything else, even an apocalypse.
