I never get secrets like this. I mean, it's not like the feminists of the world are going to come and take your feminist card away if you like a film that's misogynist (and yes, Bond films are misogynist). Just because a film is misogynist doesn't mean that you have to a) buy into that or b) get no pleasure out of it. People, it's totally possible to be completely aware of a genre's shortcomings and cognizant of its nasty politics and still get serious enjoyment out of it at the same time. How else do you explain the many feminist horror/sci fi/action geeks out there?

Have you not seen how people jump on each other on the internet? I've been harassed of being homophobic just because I didn't think a (non-canon) ship (of the slash variety) worked very well. I'm sure that the OP may just as well have been jumped on for liking those films.

She didn't say no one will ever attack you, she said most reasonable people aren't going to really care, and that's true.

Yes, but she showed bafflement as to why someone would post a secret like that. She said that reasonable people aren't going to care, and that's as if she was assuming that the internet was mostly filled with reasonable people who are completely willing to accept people who have opinions that differ from their own.

as if she was assuming that the internet was mostly filled with reasonable people

And herein lies the problem and why there's so many "but fandom would lynch me" secrets ^^' Sure, the reasonable people in fandom would refrain, but then there's the other 75%...

Actually yeah no, they kind of do jump all over you for it. I'm kind of surprised the secret hasn't gotten more wank -- I was rather scared for it...

I've certainly seen people complaining about misogyny in their respective fandoms, and I've seen plenty of people telling THOSE people to shut up and stop harshing their squee. And yes, I've seen the odd person say, "If you like this, I think you suck" about all sorts of things -- pairings, sexist shows, fandoms -- something that is not restricted to feminists. So are there some jerks out there who will judge you for what you like and don't like? Sure. But I don't think that feminists specifically, and on account of their feminism, are out there telling people what shows they should and should not like. In fact, I think most feminists are complaining about misogyny in fandoms they like themselves, which suggests that liking something and finding it misogynist are not mutually exclusive things.

It's hard to tell with anons, but there's really a dogpile effect here. One person will say that you're a terrible person for liking something and then suddenly a ton of people appear and agree with them. It's why I'm staying anon right now.

In fact, I think most feminists are complaining about misogyny in fandoms they like themselves

this kind of reasoning kind of bothers me because it's basically coming into someone else's sandbox and telling them that now that you're here, everyone else in said sandbox has to follow your rules...

I respectfully disagree. If a feminist is complaining about misogyny in a fandom she likes herself, she's not coming into someone else's sandbox. She's already stuck in the sandbox. And she probably likes the sandbox, it's nice and scratchy and she likes to dig holes so and she bets she can dig a bigger hole than you can, it will go all the way to China and she'll find DIAMONDS and- Ahem. Sorry. But, yeah, she's in the sandbox. And if there's a section of the sandbox that starts to smell funny to her, maybe she thinks somebody peed in it, why can't she say so?

The Bond fandom in particular has a huge range of fandom opinions. Fans can be highly vocal about their least favorite Bond, their most hated Bond film (I liked License to Kill!), they could make petitions in protest of a blond Bond. If a fan says to another fan, "This series is misogynist and if you like it you're misogynist too and a bad feminist," they really suck. But saying that, if they're fans, they shouldn't complain if they see something they don't like isn't that great either.

Both ways shut down discussion.

Umm, no. Not the way I see it. Just because a feminist in a fandom says, "Hey, the misogyny in this show really bugs me," does not mean that they expect everyone in the show to take the same opinion. Again, and I might not have the full picture here, but what I usually see if people telling feminists to shut up and stop ruining everything for them. Just cause I see a problem and call it as such, doesn't mean that everyone else has to see the same problem.

And who says you were in the sandbox first, anyways? It's not like there are roving bands of wild feminists out there, looking for fandoms to ruin. Like I said, we are in fandom already, and we like to talk about our relationships to our fandom, just like everyone else does.

Not to be confrontational here, but a lot of the ones I've seen in fandom discussions kind of do. It's really depressing because I know a lot of sane ones (and have to keep reminding myself of this).

I'd so be into that. I've been meaning to join an exercise club, and I flove roving. Do we get matching jackets? And mohawks?

I think it's more of a cowboy, oregan-trail type thing.

I was thinking more like Mad Max without Max. But boy are we mad! And exercising our glutes!

I vote for matching pink leather jackets!

Just want to say thanks for your comments here. I agree completely. I enjoy all sorts of tv shows and at the same time point out things like misogyny and racism. How are things going to ever improve if we don't talk about them? So thank you, it's good to know I'm not alone :)
