I’m all for the #metoo movement but I was mad that the Mulan director said that Shang couldn’t be in the new live action movie because his relationship with Mulan has power imbalance.

Given Disney's other problems with LGBTQ subtext and representation, and their long-term association with both Weinstein and Lasseter, I'm not taking it at face value.

Uh, okay, Mulan is a woman. How is Mulan/Shang remotely LGBTQ? He doesn't even express clear canonical interest in her until the very end, after he knows she's a woman. Fandom can take it many ways, sure. But canonically it is not in any way LGBTQ, and no-one anti-gay is going to take it that way unless they add scenes of them kissing while Mulan is still in disguise. Disney wouldn't have had to worry about that.

Shang started falling for her well before she revealed she was a woman, dude. Like. Rewatch it. He literally starts showing interest while he thinks she's a man.

that doesn't even make sense because they're only implied to get together at the very end where they're on equal footing.

I've always found the "There's a power imbalance therefore it's rape" argument bunk.

There are very few relationships where power IS completely balanced. A power imbalance does not automatically mean an abuse of power.
