I feel that way about the second one. Okay, and parts of the first are weak too. But parts work so well, at least for me. An excellent villain and great characters in general can make something feel really good even if the plot is spotty in parts.

I liked the first one, but whenever I think about the second one I'm just left thinking about the giant plot hole of "So the princess is gonna kill herself to stop her evil twin... then he kills their dad and takes the throne and she escapes... and completely fails to kill herself right until the end of the movie?" I mean, it's not like she had any better ideas than the first plan. She didn't have an alternative to stall for. She just hung out and waited while other people died, and then she died, and it was all pretty pointless.

It *was* pretty, though.

I think for what they are, they're great. I've seen them multiple times and they're just fun and forgettable enough that I don't mind watching them again.

agreed, they're not the strongest written movies ever, but i find them really fun to watch, the monster-designs are great and the characters were kind of ridiculous at times but entertaining.

i watched the 2019 one and it was... okay. i didn't hate it, but i felt like it was more preoccupied with getting to the next gory action set-piece than telling an even half-way fun story. and the main villain lady was really disappointingly underwhelming when she was finally restored.

I feel that way about a lot of his work. I am blown away by the visual but the plot always feels lacking. The Shape of Water was like that. Visually it was so beautiful I didn't want to turn away but the plot of girl falls for fish just doesn't work as a great love story.

I feel that way about all his stuff I've seen. He's the epitome of style over substance to me. Take Crimson Peak for example. Visually, it's absolutely amazing, the colours are vibrant, the details are insane, the sets are great. You can feel the love. But then the story and characters...just no. How do you manage to make such basic story and characters played by such good actors so dull? Same with Hellboy, Pan, Pacific Rim, The Shape of Water, etc. It feels like the visuals and his directing style suck the life out of everything and leave them as empty husks.

Same. It did have some funny and endearing moments, but all in all it felt... pretty yet hollow.
