Are there really authors who talk about non-progressive political leanings? That seems like it would be career suicide.

Nah. Depends on who your audience is. See: Sad and/or Rapid Puppies.

Ugh, that guy. I read one of his books and there was, idk, a pre-teen girl or maybe young teen supposedly into BDSM with older guys? Which is about when I noped out. And then it turned out the author is a super conservative Catholic. Idk, except eww.

Really dumb thing to say, anon, I'm not going to sugarcoat it

There's an entire right-wing publishing industry!

I honestly couldn't give a shit. I'd probably only get into a new original work knowing it's made by a fanfic writer I admire. (because there is a huge difference between writing using preexisting characters and creating your own) Judging a writer for once writing fanfiction is just plain bullshit to me. You might as well write off every artist for drawing stick figures as an adolescent when they were just learning how to draw.

There is no such thing as finding fanfic trends in published literature unless the author literally converted their explicit fanfic under a different title with different names. And yeah, I know it happens, but that's exactly the example that proves the rule.

If all you read is PWP, then maybe I'd get it, but more often than not fanfic writers detail a character and explore their various boundaries that their set personality allows them. It creates an understanding of the characters that most people miss because basic caricatures are all that most authors strive for these days. It's sort of like waiting a day to take a second look at your work, with new eyes and a different perspective, you see everything with a new understanding.

Honestly, I would love to know if a favourite writer of mine wrote fanfic, because you can't just create content out of nowhere, there's always a base or an inspiration coming from somewhere, and honestly, if that base is fanfic then the more experience the better.
