Wait, an SPN secret about how the female characters on the show suck? Shocking.

I'm not sure it's possible for the writers to create a female character that everyone watching would be pleased to see Sam or Dean hook up with. I'm also not sure why people found the sex scenes of the last (and the upcoming) episodes "gratuitous" -- seriously, what sex scenes are allowed? Those for the purposes of reproduction? The sex scene in the last episode made complete sense -- Ruby is obviously into Sam, and wants to make him connect with her (for whatever reasons); Sam was grieving, screwed up, and wanting to connect with another person (even if she happened to be dead at the time). Not really sure what all the OOC comments are about, but I also recognize that people have different interpretations of what is in character and what isn't.

However, I just have to say -- NOT EVERY FEMALE CHARACTER IS A MARY SUE. You'd think that female writers were incapable of writing anything other than themselves based on the extent to which this accusation gets thrown around.

What's more, it's not like the boys hook up excessively on SPN - Sam's had sex what, three times in the course of the series? And Dean's a horndog, of course, but that's an actual personality trait that matters to his character. I definitely understand complaints if a romance consumes a character's storyline - on Heroes, for example, Sylar/Maya and Claire/West were the plots for those characters, and it was terrible and boring. SPN is not about romance, though, never has been and never will be. Sex, in other words, doesn't get in the way of the plot. Love interests are episodic with the exception of Ruby, and I wouldn't call her a love interest, given that Sam obviously doesn't have feelings for her, the sex was based in desperation, and I doubt they're gonna go there again. As for Anna, well, tonight's episode will most likely be her last, as well.

And in another anime club I was a member of (briefly) I could not get the president to show anything shoujo, despite protests. Finally he let us watch a single episode of Hana Yori Dango, but that was it. And they made fun of it the whole time.

154. I will admit that I did not like the first couple of episodes of Welcome to the NHK. All the way through suicide island I thought it was a silly pointless show but I kept watching it because it was part of the anime club line up. As soon as they introduced the other hikkomori and starting explaining Yamazaki's backstory, I began to realize this is what the show had been building up to. I don't know if it was just because I was going through a similar point of my life as the characters but I started to get really involved in the show. I still think the first half of the show is silly, but there is some seriously amazing stuff in the end. The end of Yamazaki's arc and the finale are still the only times I have ever cried in any anime.
