She has the most personality and drive out of all of them. Seriously, would most people rather have a Shinji or a Rei around? What kind of boring lives do these people lead?

I don't dislike any of the main three, but Asuka's definitely my favorite out of them. It's funny too, as she started out being my least favorite, and I think the process I went through in understanding her is exactly what was intended. She's brash and annoying, but then these cracks start showing, and once you find out what's behind them, everything gives out and there's a flood. I actually find her background to be more tragic than Shinji or Rei's specifically because she's so overwhelmingly emotional. I think she probably felt the rejection much harder than either of them would have. She's so driven to succeed because her whole idea of self is based on it.

So yeah, to cut this off before I get even more wordy, I both like Asuka a lot and find her incredibly compelling.

I liked Kaworu too, but he was an angel.

Also I think people tend to forget that Asuka is 14 years old. Having substituted an eighth-grade science class for the past couple of days, I can tell you that she doesn't really behave more or less differently than a typical 14-year old girl.

Don't I know it. The first time I watched the series, I came out liking Misato, Kaji, and Kaworu. That's about it. It took another run-through for the main three to grow on me. Of course, you don't have to like any of the character to appreciate the story. Much love for that series all around.

That is a great point. I know that the me of now would find the me of ten years ago intolerable to be around, and I didn't even have a big tragic backstory to blame for my attitude. Middle-schoolers of all types can be awfully grating. Asuka's not much of a stretch from reality, and given all she's had to live through, she could be a lot less pleasant.
