154. I think most 'otaku' just can't think of a better way to cope with life than creating an endless, self-perpetuating cycle of social problems caused by their obsession with Japanese cartoons. I don't have as much sympathy for them as I do for people who have bad social anxiety problems and attempt to work with them and live normal lives. It's not as if liking anime too much to function like a normal person in the outside world is a disorder in itself.

I don't think something that might be a result of social problems is comparable to the actual social disorder, s'all. Because with the actual disorder, you have people who try to cope with it and live normal lives. And then you might have extreme anime fans who watch cartoons to deal, and most of them have pretty much decided that they don't give a shit, because they're perfectly content to stay inside all day on 4chan. 'Otaku' and 'person with social anxiety disorder' aren't exactly equatable, because there are people who fit on both ends of the social anxiety spectrum as far as coping mechanisms go.

Sato acts exactly like my best friend who has social anxiety disorder. If you watch the show, you'll notice Sato's not an otaku (until Yamazaki gets him into the whole otaku culture). What he has is classified as an actual mental illness, in the United States at least.
