Erm, here's one reason why the BMI (as it's currently used) sucks, actually:

It's WRONG about what a healthy weight is. The normal/healthy weight range should START at 20. Not 18.5.

Why? Because studies on obesity have found the MOST dangerous weight range to be anything under 20. That INCLUDES the high end. That is, even people with a BMI higher than 30 are at much less risk, statistically, for premature death. Extra weight is a protective factor in hospital stays, major surgery, and many illnesses.

Something which the weight loss industry would DEARLY love for the world not to know. Which is why they cherry-pick the data they present to the public - because, oh yes, all the major studies on obesity have traditionally been funded by the weight loss industry.

(See The Obesity Myth, by Paul Campos. Scientific American Reports did an investigation into the major claims of his book, and found them sound. Particularly the source of funding for studies on obesity and weight loss, which no one involved could find a reasonable explanation for.)

You may note over time that some sources ARE changing the lower end of the recognised "healthy" range to 20. I've noticed this a few times now (to my - pleased! - surprise), although where I've seen this, I can't immediately recall.
