Assuming there are female characters you either like or don't mind, I don't think this makes you a sexist.

If anything, it makes you someone that lets other people's responses dictate your feelings toward something, instead of being able to separate those out and evaluate the thing on its own merits or flaws. And that's negatively impacting you more than anyone else. So... gl with that I guess.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-29 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're overreacting to someone else's overreaction?

(Anonymous) 2020-03-29 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
i'll never get this, i might find individuals who are overly aggressive about something they hate/love annoying, but it won't affect my opinion of the thing in question itself bc it's not at fault for having aggressive fans.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-29 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not really about fault, just associations. After a certain amount of time, the emotions and memories you associate with the fandom/character are the ones of exhaustion or frustration or even fear from being involved with the fandom, rather than the emotions or memories actually evoked by the show/character themselves. So you evolve a dislike for them not necessarily based on them themselves, but on the negative experiences you associate with them.

+1

i guess i'll never get it bc even if i do find some fans annoying, once i get enough space from them i genuinely stop caring about them and my irritation fades away.

Examples would make this secret so much more interesting.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-29 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This! Wish OP would tell us.

I kind of feel like this about the new Doctor Who. I would probably just dislike her if fandom actually treated her like any of the other previous Doctors who could be criticized normally - but people act like you're being misogynistic because you dare to have any kind of criticism over her and not going along with the hive mind to agree how Perfect and Pure she is.
It sucks more when the only people who openly agree are the people who straight up think that she sucks BECAUSE she's a woman, and I'm like not its because the writing for the character and the actor is crap.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-29 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen, a lot of the fandom agrees that her writing is bad, but that Jodie is doing amazingly with what she's been given, and that separation is quite clear.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-29 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could find the parts of fandom you hang out in. The parts I've been in all insist you have to at least hate Chibnell and think the writing is terrible, and anyone who disagrees is just plain wrong.

I get this OP and it sucks. Love the picture btw.

I mean, there is the whole “you’re racist for not shipping black guys with other guys” thing.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-29 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. There are many characters/ ships/ etc that I don't like, but the only ones I hate are the ones with fans screaming "How dare you not like this thing! If you don't like this thing, you're _____ist/ _______phobic!"

So often, it's something stupid too. Like the character I'm apparently homophobic for not liking even though she's canonically straight.

I feel this secret.

Even the female characters that I LOVE, when I see people out there telling me I have to love them or I'm sexist, I have to fight back the urge to stop liking them.

I have a visceral and, I admit, knee jerk reaction to people attempting to use shame to control me.

The irony is that it is controlling you, just in the opposite way I guess.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I obviously understand people disliking characters. For whatever reasons. And most of the time I'm fine with it. But there are times that I really think there is something more behind it. Like when Ruby and Bela were announced to be appearing on Supernatural and people were already ranting about what horrible characters they were and how they would ruin the show before they had even appeared in an episode! Or when people go on about how they hate a girl character for reasons but then say they like a guy character who shares a lot of the same traits/aspects/whatever as the girl. I wouldn't say anything to anyone about their views, but I definitely have quietly unfollowed people for it.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's tricky because a lot of this is talking about patterns, more than it's talking about any one individual person. There's absolutely a gendered pattern behind the reaction to Ruby and Bela on Supernatural. At the same time there's no reason that any individual person couldn't dislike them (personally I disliked Bela, but liked Ruby, especially once they changed actresses).

I feel it a bit... telling that you say that it only includes female characters. Because there's male characters out there that have similar fans with similar actions (even with the " it's just -ism!" crowd, there's LGBT+ males), yet they aren't among your hated character..

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
This. Sorry, but yeah, I'm gonna be skeptical of you when the list of characters you hate consists entirely of female characters despite there statistically being a larger number of male characters in media overall.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
right? as if there aren't male characters with exactly these kind of fanbases as well, but apparently that's not an issue for them, just for the ladies.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
you say you don't "need" to hate the male characters, which means that you *do* need to hate the female ones

that seems to be more your problem than the existence of vocal fans
