We can't trust the Chinese government to give us accurate information about COVID-19.

We can't trust them to give accurate information about anything. Their news media is all party-approved propaganda.

Likewise with the Russian media.

I don't think that's an unpopular opinion.

Ditto the US government, or at least not complete information, because the CDC is running on fumes and there’s not enough guidance on a national level because someone thunks he can downplay and ignore it out of existence.

We can't trust anyone's government to give us accurate information about COVID-19.

Maybe WHO.

The last I checked, WHO was in China, and had been for quite some time?

Headquartered in Switzerland and answers to the UN.

Seriously, it's not that hard to not make shit up.

Yeah, no poop.

I mean you can't trust any other government either, but with China all you've got is what the government says.

Not saying I trust China, but...well, I trust the US less. At least about this. About other stuff? Honestly, at this point, it's neck and neck.

I trust the US government more in its public reporting, but less in its sincerity and efficacy in actually helping its population

The thing is that I think, if the US government reports out numbers, they're not going to be a straight-out lie. They may have major problems (for instance, they may be severely affected by chronic under-testing) but they're not going to be outright falsified (probably). I have no such confidence in the Chinese government

In the US you also have the option of turning to local news sources who may be getting their numbers from the state - if not individual county - health departments and even individual hospitals, so the lie would have to be organized across all levels of government as well as hospitals and many different media outlets who don't all have the same agendas or political leanings. The numbers may not always agree, but as long as they aren't far off then probably no one is lying.
