One of these things is not like the other IMO. Snape is a great character, he's just morally complex and not necessarily morally admirable in the way that some of his fans want him to be. Whereas I think the theme that runs through the rest of these characters is that they're profoundly self-centered in a way that the text really expects us to find sympathetic and likable.

Just my take

I mean, Snape is pretty profoundly self-centered and the text most certainly wants us to be sympathetic by the end.

I don't think that the text expects us to find his self-centeredness itself sympathetic, but eye of the beholder I guess.

All he's got going for him is self-centeredness pointed in the right direction. Take that away, and you're left with a sad-sack wizard-nazi with Nice Guy syndrome with lifelong violent tendencies who bullies vulnerable children. Self-centeredness is Snape's best quality.

I don't think you can deny that Snape made substantive material circumstances over the course of the novel, which I don't think can be characterized as "self-centered." I already said that he's morally complex, I'm not pushing some "Snape is a hero" line here.

I think I can deny that, actually. Those words in that order don't mean what you think they mean.

This was based on my comment. I get all this. I also had teachers like Snape. That's why I hate him. Abusive teachers are a trigger for me.

Oh yeah there are definitely good reasons to hate Snape, it just struck me that he wasn't in quite the same category as the other characters listed
