Same, OP. Same. The characters I hate the most are nearly always male.

Me too. And I like a lot of female characters that get hate. I suppose I am doing fandom wrong but oh well.

Chakotay is boring and a wimp. I waited that long for there to be a Native American on Star Trek and we get HIM?

There are way more characters to hate in Harry Potter than just Snape.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Last I checked, OP isn't taking away your fictional character hating license, so you do you.

One of these things is not like the other IMO. Snape is a great character, he's just morally complex and not necessarily morally admirable in the way that some of his fans want him to be. Whereas I think the theme that runs through the rest of these characters is that they're profoundly self-centered in a way that the text really expects us to find sympathetic and likable.

Just my take

(Anonymous) 2020-03-30 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, Snape is pretty profoundly self-centered and the text most certainly wants us to be sympathetic by the end.

This was based on my comment. I get all this. I also had teachers like Snape. That's why I hate him. Abusive teachers are a trigger for me.

I think it's a bit of that... I don't know the right term, but the writer wants you to like a character or feel bad for them or whatever, but the character keeps doing obnoxious things, so it's even more grating than if they were just a jerk being presented as a jerk?
I don't know all of these characters well enough to say if that applies to all of them, but it's definitely applicable to a few up there.

Wait wait wait, what the hell is Chakotay doing in there? Paris, sure I'd understand that, but Chakotay is cool. Admittedly I didn't give Voyager much time back in the day and my rewatch of it is only up to season two, but so far I like him better than Janeway. Better than Paris by a damn mile. As first officers go, hes beating the pants of both Riker and Kira.

I hate more female characters than male characters, but I also really love more female characters than male characters...I just have stronger feelings in general towards female characters. For the most part I'm more meh about male characters and don't generally have super strong feelings either way about them (I'll like/dislike rather than love/hate some of them, but most of them I'm more like "eh, he's okay, I guess").

Yes, you should also be hating Riley Finn.

I don't think so, you don't have to hate anyone.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-31 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure I truly hate any characters (maybe some of the more horrible antagonists), but I do strongly dislike some (Ted Mosby is one, but though I would say I do somewhat dislike Chakotay, if I had to choose the Voyager character I most dislike, it would be Neelix). Right now, though, my strongest dislike is Amelia Sheppard from Grey's Anatomy, probably partly because the show currently airing, so the feelings keep getting reinforced.
silverr: a character from The Devil Wears Prada with his hand over his mouth (_oops)

I assume you're not talking about characters that are written to be hated? e.g., Kai Winn, The Purple Man from Jessica Jones -- but rather characters that we're supposed to like.

I wouldn't say "hate" -- hate expends a lot of energy -- but there are certainly characters that I'm not interested in watching: Neelix from Voyager, J.D. From Scrubs, and McKay from SGA are three that come to mind.

No, I agree with you. I think I can count on one hand the number of characters I actually hate that weren't written specifically to be hated.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-31 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hating ted mosby can never be wrong, OP.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-31 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ross. From Friends. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-31 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, Will Halstead is the reason I gave up on Med back in season one. Completely agree with you there.

I know why people might hate Xander, Snape, and Moseby, but can someone fill me in on the other two and why they might be easy to hate?

Right there with you on Chakotay, Snape and Xander. I don't know anything about Will Hallstead and I never watched HIMYM, but given what I've heard from my friends who do, Ted Mosby sounds like an immensely hateable character.

Most of the characters I hate are male, too, but there are a few female characters I just can't stand, too, like Dolores Umbridge and Dr. Pulaski. Also Countess Alessia Caro from TES: Oblivion, because she's a horrible, self-righteous racist who tortures Argonians for fun. Same goes for her advisor, Hildara Mothril, who I largely blame for Alessia's views, as there's no way she got them from her mother.

And these are characters that I love. You and I would not probably not get along, then.

But I rarely hate characters, only am annoyed by them. Like, say, Neelix on Voyager.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-31 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That Will guy turned me off immediately when I first saw advertisements for his show. It looked like another one of those "white savior" doctor shows. No thanks. I've had enough of that to last a lifetime. (I'm white, and even I'm tired of white shenanigans.)

(Anonymous) 2020-03-31 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Chakotay is too bland to elicit as passionate an emotion as hate.

Awww. I loved Chakotay, and I majorly shipped Janeway/Chakotay when I was a little fanlet.

Xander also kinda grew on me as the seasons went on.

But I agree with not liking Snape. Abusive authority figures are a big yikes for me.

And I don't know who the other two guys are, so I have no feelings on them one way or the other. But your thoughts are completely valid; we all like (or dislike) characters for different reasons. You're not doing fandom wrong by having an opinion.
