Most delightful scents....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2020-03-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So I was out today, and it's finally gotten warm enough here (and dry enough) for people to mow and OH, how I love the scent of freshly mown grass! Also - as it's still chilly as hell at night - I can smell someone's fireplace.
So - new mown grass
bonfire/wood smoke
freshly turned,damp earth
the sea
cedar - both the green needles and the cut wood.

What scents out in nature do you like, Nonnies?

DA

There's a word for that scent: petrichor. It's pretty rare, but it is Googleable.

It's too early yet, but I love the smell of lilacs blooming.

ooh yeah I love the fireplace smell

this might be cliche but rose petals. I have that rose water facial mist stuff. Rose-scented soap is nice too. and rose tea...it's just so soothing.

Roses smell amazing. My mother always had some rose bushes, with pink, red, and yellow roses. They smelled *heavenly*. My sister and I used to get a...shampoo? Or lotion? It's been so long...called 'Roses Roses'. Loved that smell!

It's always so disappointing that roses from the florist/grocery have almost no smell at all.

Ocean/sea scents. Pine/evergreen scents. Autumn scents.

Most other plants I'm allergic to, which sort of ruins the scent aspect. Spring is miserable for me and I rarely can actually smell during spring. Smoke/fire gets me stuffy too.

I'm very allergic to pollen and such, and spring does suck, but oh, the heady scents.....:D

Right now where I live, the wisteria and the orange tree in my yard are in full bloom, and the scent is so sweet, so heady, it's almost TOO sweet and cloying. But when it wafts in through an open window at night, it truly makes me happy to be alive.

Oh, that sounds lovely!
I forgot to put honeysuckle on my list. There is a ton of honeysuckle vine on the trees around my house, and it drifts into the house in summer; in the morning, in the early evening....

It, too, can be overwhelming, but on a warm breeze.....

Gardenias - It can be overpowering if there are too many, but the scent of just one or two flowers blooming is amazing
Honeysuckles
Orange blossoms
Snow - I'm not much fond of the cold and I now live in a place that basically doesn't get snow, but when I did there was a particular crisp, clean scent of dry snow - not the first snow (dirty) or the last one (watery), but some time between the two, there would be this really nice snow scent.
Water - A clean brook or stream moving fairly quickly.
Moss - There's this green smell that a quiet, mossy forest has that I attribute more to the moss than the trees.

Oh YES.
Snow is amazing. I used to go for walks in our woods as a kid, in the snow...loved the *hush*, the creak of it underfoot, and that *scent*....
And then twilight would come down, all blue and still....
I really miss good, snowy days.
Moss has an amazing smell, too, you're so right.

Delightful!
I've always wished to find a wallow of violets like Laura and Mary did in the Little House books....

I’m sad that basically no nurseries in the US carry scented violets, there was one in north-central California that used to, but they stopped taking mail orders over a decade ago, and I think closed down after that. I live in SoCal so not really damp enough for violets, but there’s a shady spot in the yard where I leave the hose running once a week that I grow some violets and wild strawberries and stuff in. I love them.

I'm always kinda sad when I think about this because a lot of the scents I love give me major migraines (bonfires, a lot of my favourite flowers like jasmine, hyacinths or lilac, a lot of wood scents etc.).

But I also love the smell of earth and petrichor.
