Because of what he's wearing on the left? But that was fairly typical of the time period, right? I don't recall anything that suggests he's very aware of fashion, period.

In the Roman sequence he was pretty well-dressed, and up-to-date, even. He had a v. nice, aristocratic outfit in Revolutionary France, where people who dressed like aristocrats were getting killed.

Most of the other sequences, he's got nice kit it's just... out of date. (He likes nice things, and hangs on to them through the changing fashions.) So, I could see him enjoying the look, he'd just wear it for a cringe-inducingly long time.
