I'm wrapped up in the moral dilemma of should I go to the store now that I've run out of milk even though I have enough food that I will not actually starve if I don't.

Can you elaborate on why this is a moral dilemma for you?

da - presumably because wherever anon lives is under social isolation protocols and people are advised to stay home for non-essential tasks, so anon is trying to decide whether getting more milk really counts as 'essential'

I can't see why not

I work at a grocery store. I feel if you have run out of milk and enough other items to make a trip productive, it might be worth it, even if you have enough food you technically won't starve. The amount of people who are still stopping in frequently and just picking up a couple of things are kinda huh to me, though. I'm guessing they mostly just feel the need to get out of the house and go somewhere and the store is one of the acceptable places to go?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I stop in frequently because all the assholes around me keep hoarding toilet paper and I'm going to actually run out soon. (Well, I don't stop in super frequently but I do end up getting one or two items so that my visit wasn't completely wasted. If not for that, I'd limit visits to once every two weeks. I hate people.)

Personally I stop in to pick up just a few things because I don't have a car, so I have to limit my shopping to what I can comfortably carry.

Yeah, this is normally me, but recently I’ve ditched the “comfortable” part and have been connecting with my inner pack mule. I carried $85 worth of food home yesterday so I wouldn’t have to go back for two weeks. Then I started my period this morning, so I have to go to a different store tomorrow and get pads and pain meds and, if they have any, hydrogen peroxide because I’m hand washing my clothes to avoid the laundromat and I’ll probably bleed on something. I’m gonna see if my housemate needs anything; if I can save her a trip that’s one less potential exposure, and she’s gonna drop groceries off for her uncle, so if he needs anything I can grab that too.

SA - I'm going to go. I found an article mentioning that the first days in the month might be a relatively crowded time because of food stamp funds going out and some people get getting paid on the first, so I should probably go tonight and then avoid the store for as long as I can after. I do need more than just milk, but the milk was kind of the "Without this I can't have that or that..." linchpin of my kitchen whereas everything else was easier to do without.

Whoops, no I'm not going the store is closing early now!

Please think about dried/ultra pasteurized/canned milk.

Not that it's good for drinking straight, mind you, but it has a great shelf life and it's wonderful in recipes.

Also, hard cheeses.

beware of those "articles" going around, they're not necessarily true. it varies by state and I know for a fact in mine (my roommate works for DHS and disseminates foodshare info for a living) that the 1st-15th is when the state receives the funds which they distribute to recipients on a regular schedule throughout the month. here, there is no such thing as a special time when all WIC recipients get their money.

Only a small number of states do this. I think trying to buy stuff other than WIC eligible food might still help, assuming stores are running low on those things. I don’t think WIC eligible food varies from state to state the way when people get their SNAP benefits does.
