I think most fancasts are just people looking for whoever looks the most like they picture different characters.

I don't think your point is fundamentally wrong

I also think Oscar Isaac could play almost any role

I always get derailed by thinking about how long it takes to make a movie even if said movie got optioned, written and greenlit and I worry my fancasts will be the wrong age by then.

Or that they wouldn't want the part. There's a movie/tv series I'd love to see made, and I know exactly who I want in the lead but it's a gay role and I worry the actor won't want to do it.

Or I worry about appropriate levels of star power-is this on tv? Is it a blockbuster studio thing or an indie?

Hard same, OP. I have a handful of favorite actors, but I can't really imagine any of them in any dream adaptations of my favorite books and stuff.

This is how I do it.

I have a fair number of actors from film and television in my head from noting them for decades from things I've watched and sometimes I do dreamcast in my mind or on here if someone asks. Some people only note a few, but I bet you know a lot more than you think, even if only as 'that one in that thing'. IMDb is really helpful, especially since, for some reason, age really matters to me, so I can pull up all the actors born in a particular year (or range of years) and choose the ones I know, like, and think would work in a role.

Same, OP. I just...can't do it. I don't remember enough actors to really know who would fit where and even in movies i liked a lot, I barely know who anyone is (unless it's a series like Hunger Games or Marvel, but even those...I only know who played Katniss, I have no clue of anyone else's names.....)

So, yeah.

I feel you-- I mean I know LOADS of actors but that doesn't mean I'll be able to think of one that fits every character.

Like, I could NEVER satisfactorily fancast The Left Hand of Darkness, because I just don't know any actors who I could see as Estraven. I can think of a couple who could conceivably play Genly, but Estraven?

But even with things that don't have difficult casting problems like that, sometimes I just... DON'T picture an actor when I'm reading the book, or I picture an actor who's aged out of the role.
