It's definitely a fandom culture thing overall (not just with SU but it's very prevalent there)—you can only like pure, unproblematic things and if you don't adhere to that and like something deemed "problematic" you're a monster. We've lost the ability to say "I like this character even though they did bad / questionable things, which I find compelling, and/or because they're an unrepentant asshole." I've never really cared for the Diamonds one way or another, but hopefully the fandom culture pendulum will swing away from the puritan extreme sooner rather than later, OP.
