That’s a very good point, and I wish more people understood this. You can find a character interesting without condoning their behaviour. There shouldn’t need to be a disclaimer, but sadly, here we are.

I actually found her to be intriguing as that kind of character who isn’t all they appear to be, her motives very ambiguous, which makes an analysis of her very fun to me. Whether someone is a full on villain or in that morally grey area, fans are allowed to like her, or find her compelling.

Maybe someday, we’ll get official explanations, but until then, there’s our own thoughts or even fanfiction.

What I hate is all of the people who seem to have the complete inability to distinguish between villainous motivations. Like, there's a huge difference between a character who is doing awful things because they want power or fame or money and a character who is doing bad things because they genuinely believe they're in the right or because they think it's necessary. You can't treat the two things as being the same because they really, really aren't.

I love Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz a lot. I'm really disappointed that we won't get more of her because of CN's bullshit, but she was incredibly compelling. TBH, people's opinions of Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz tell me whether or not I'll ultimately get along with that person. The ones who are adamant that she's evil, awful, unrepentantly terrible tend to be incredibly obnoxious people, anyway.

Agreed.

I'm okay with not hearing her "side", even if it's disappointing, because sometimes that's just how grief goes. When you lose someone important, you don't always get closure or answers or apologies--they're just gone.

Besides that, though, I do agree with you. She was really complex and obviously flawed and trying to do what she could but failing all the way and I think that's super interesting--but try saying anything positive about her.

I think she can embody all of these things - compelling yet also casually abusive - and still be someone fascinating. I get wanting more as well but I think the approach of us not knowing because Steven never gets to is also very valid. He's left with trying to figure out how to feel about her based on what he knows and it's an ever evolving opinion. We'll never truly see an adult Steven but I do wonder how that man would view his mother for sure

I’ve put a lot of time and thought into Pink headcanons that fit with what we learned from canon, so it always bothers me when folks headcanon her into something evil that doesn’t fit canon at all. That seems to be how the “manipulator” characters go, though. (See also: Dumbledore.)

It's definitely a fandom culture thing overall (not just with SU but it's very prevalent there)—you can only like pure, unproblematic things and if you don't adhere to that and like something deemed "problematic" you're a monster. We've lost the ability to say "I like this character even though they did bad / questionable things, which I find compelling, and/or because they're an unrepentant asshole." I've never really cared for the Diamonds one way or another, but hopefully the fandom culture pendulum will swing away from the puritan extreme sooner rather than later, OP.

Considering the form of the show, which essentially takes a "you can always be redeemed" route I'm a little disappointed, but considering the communities who are attracted to that form with LGBT+ content, I'm not surprised.

Because we got her character development told to us in reverse, and through such a narrow lens, like... there's SO much about her that I still want to know, but it seems like a LOT of people who lack critical media literacy skills are just going to write her off and ignore the fact that she DID learn and grow a lot during even just her last few years on Earth. It's a shame we don't get to see more of that journey because I also find her really interesting and not entirely unsympathetic despite her mistakes and the harm she caused.
