Oh no, that's terrible. I've considered raising chickens someday but even after reading about it, I don't know if I'm ready and I don't want to mess it up. I definitely wouldn't want to do it as a panic reaction.

You're right though...I think a lot of people who don't know much about raising your own food have heavily romanticized how easy it is and they're in for a surprise.

some friends of mine tried to start their own chicken farm and it turned out to be way more work than they thought it was going to be. They wound up selling their chickens and equipment to an already established farm.

AYRT—well, it sounds like you’ve done more research than some of these people, and keeping chickens can be fun and rewarding, so when you get the chance, if you have the space and it’s legal where you are, go for it. Just maybe not in the middle of a pandemic. Also, one piece of advice: make sure you have a vet nearby who will see chickens, especially if yoh mean to keep them as pets!

Maybe you can pick up some rescue chickens from people who figure out they’re too much work!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I do live somewhere where it's legal to have chickens and have a lot of space because we're out in the country. I just want to make sure that we can build a very sturdy chicken coop and a good sized run that'll keep out foxes and coyotes, which are active here.
