What I find interesting about this is... most male actors cast in main character roles in Chinese dramas aren't exactly huge and buff anyway. And of course a character wasn't going to look like a drawn stylized version so idk what people were expecting. I do understand people's scepticism after just some initial stills because he does tend to look kinda sullen and constipated in those. But I don't understand the people who watched the show and still think he's terrible - like, sure, if he's not your taste then that's that but you'd have to be pretty bad at reading facial expressions to say that he does a bad job at the role.

I watched the donghua and thought... but that version of Lan Wangji isn't exactly swole, either? Though I think I've seen fanart where he's ridiculously muscled despite a relatively trim-looking frame, like really bad comic book art. If that was what people were expecting, then IDK. It's not for me.

I don't understand people who thought he was terrible in the show. Maybe they had a totally different concept and expectation for the character. Or maybe the performance was too subtle. I thought it was brilliant, the perfect example of a (relatively) calm surface but lots of emotions seething beneath.

It's probably bc in the novel, there's a scene where he lifts a giant statue with just one hand, and there's more of an emphasis on Lans in general having ridiculous arm strength. Which tends to get interpreted as him being swole as hell.

He is also pretty built in S2 of the donghua, although it's not to like. bodybuilder proportions. But he does have some wiiiide shoulders.

Personally, my feelings are that he's a cultivator with magic powers so why can't he be super strong and also more of a twig? Maybe his muscles are like. magically super dense or extra efficient or something idk. Martial arts built muscles tend to look leaner anyway.
Also Yibo was perfect in every other way, so I'm fine with him not being super built.

Or...able to bridal carry Xiao Zhan...I mean that would have been cute but I'd rather he not cripple himself either so...

I assumed the basis for his strength was the cultivation, too. IIRC in one of the additional chapters of the novel, he holds up a roof shed for like...hours? To protect villagers during a storm, and they don't believe he can do it until he actually does it. To me, that suggests he's not Mr. Universe. I'd expect (at best) someone who's lean and more wiry. But I wouldn't change a single thing about Wang Yibo, so...
