OP to the post you responded, but YES, this! I mean, yeah there were the heydays of saaaay, shipping wars that were also terrible, but most of us understood that it was about the characters we were passionate for (and passionately hated XD) than it was the actual real person behind it and what it said about them.

Or like, I remember as a preteen in early 2000s whose favorite character on Digimon was Ken/Digimon Emperor. I bet if that show had come out now and someone said he was a favorite, some other random person online would be listing his "problematic" qualities and why "you're a bad person for liking them."

god fandom nowadays would tear into Ken (my poor baby boy sobs. before Zuko he was probably a good example of a redemption arc done right), and let’s not forget the Takeru/Hikaru/Daisuke triangle that was basically a mimic of Taichi/Sora/Yamato. I’m not sure if it was a good thing that they left the 02 kids out of Tri but at least they escaped that hell.

I’m just content to sit in my rocking chair on my porch and watch the kids battle each other on my lawn nowadays tbh
