Complex, plotted story arcs have their place, but single-episode plots make for so much better comfort-viewing. You could just sit down, watch a single episode, and leave with a sense of closure. Or watch two or three or four - pick your favourites from three different seasons if you feel like it, because each is a contained story, you can mix and match, you can start and stop at any point. Case/monster/etc of the week just fills a different niche. The reason I return to old favourites for comfort watching is less that they are old and more that newer faves, which are often closer to 8-hour-events meant to be consumed in order, in one or two sittings, while you pay proper attention, simply don't have the right format for casual watching.
I don't always want a proper dinner, so to speak. Sometimes I just want a snack!
